Hi there. People asked where they can get barbel the size of the one that the girl is holding on page one. I've got one place that you will definately catch them. As you go through bloemhof, past the bridge that goes to Hertzogville i think, look for a place that you can turn left past the bridge...the old transvaal side of the river. Any place you can get to the river here is excellent. There are monsters here that i would not suggest you take on with anything other than open spool sea reels and at least 11ft sea rods, and 15kg breaking strain. My dad caught one there of 22.5kg, on a half drowned swallow that i got out the river. It went downstream and he managed to turn it after over 100 metres. It got "stuck" twice on the way back before going back downriver for a second spell. It's not the size of the monsters in the lower orange river, but definately above average. Any fresh dead bird, or small carp head works a charm. Suggest getting your hands on Bandit 10/0 hooks. The people at the tackle shop might laugh, but not to worry. Bear in mind that in the tight lines in 1999 or 2000 where the 1st images of the lower orange river barbel were shown, the one barbel had a 3kg carp in its mouth that the guy used for bait!!!!
