OK besides the size , place etc. Can anyone give me a reason why these fish or any barbel posed with would be kept. Can they be eaten or is it just for show.

Ryan,i hope you told them you got those fish on artlure only, shows you that those blokes arent as lazy as you think they are and that lures work just as well as bait! Here's one i caught while bass fishing with a Norman lure (7,7kgs)

Hey buckles,

All mine (those that I posted)were realease alive with no harm done to them other than a hook sore in the mouth. You will see some of them in my pics look badly scared - this was in breeding season and they basically attack one another during the spawning process. So my photies were for show.:fbash:wfish

I am not partial to ating any freshwater fish especially with the amount of &^**)*( pumped into our rivers etc.

Hi there. People asked where they can get barbel the size of the one that the girl is holding on page one. I've got one place that you will definately catch them. As you go through bloemhof, past the bridge that goes to Hertzogville i think, look for a place that you can turn left past the bridge...the old transvaal side of the river. Any place you can get to the river here is excellent. There are monsters here that i would not suggest you take on with anything other than open spool sea reels and at least 11ft sea rods, and 15kg breaking strain. My dad caught one there of 22.5kg, on a half drowned swallow that i got out the river. It went downstream and he managed to turn it after over 100 metres. It got "stuck" twice on the way back before going back downriver for a second spell. It's not the size of the monsters in the lower orange river, but definately above average. Any fresh dead bird, or small carp head works a charm. Suggest getting your hands on Bandit 10/0 hooks. The people at the tackle shop might laugh, but not to worry. Bear in mind that in the tight lines in 1999 or 2000 where the 1st images of the lower orange river barbel were shown, the one barbel had a 3kg carp in its mouth that the guy used for bait!!!!

Ok got my location up. I'm in Cape Town now, but lived in Hoopstad and Vryburg for a while. Fished Bloemhof quite a bit. Also for yellowfish there is a nice spot called Scandinawië drif, near orkney/viljoenskroon. They are not lunkers, but you can catch a lot in a day as long as you hopefully release the lot. black crickets fished on a float under the bridge floating towards the islands in the river worked for me. I saw something like the barbel run in the okavango there late one night with barbel schools right beside the river snapping at anything that touched their whiskers. Never saw anything like it in the vaal. There were fish swimming that i hope never to get on a hook with a coffee grinder and a papgooier. As soon as you shone a light tho they would slowly move off. My final hint would be to put in a big a piece of bait as you can manage to cast, and wait for a fish to run with it. You have all seen the picture of the catfish with the soccerball in it's mouth. Keep that in mind when you next time think that 3-5kg carp head is to big for bait....
