@JB2.........we definitely do NOT catch SBT's in the recreational sector.......that I can promise you. The Fish Hoek Tuna were a tributary of the main Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Biomass, and as the specie has been hammered in general, those smaller shoals that used to break off as they migrated Southwards, are just not there anymore. I cannot back this up with numbers and quotes right now, but research has revealed that this happened alsewhere in the world too. At the time, there were many foreign boats raping our waters, many more than we actually know about, and they were catching our Tuna long before we had the technology, or even knew that the Tuna were there. The last Bluefin caught in our waters, that I know of, was caught last year I think, by a Portuese pole fishing vessel from Cape Town, and it was only picked up during the grading procedure by Ryan Nienaber. I have been recreational Tuna fishing for many years now, and nobody that I know of has caught a Bluefin recently. The odd Big Eye still gets caught from time to time, and yes they are pretty similar looking to a YF.

Perhaps somebody with more accurate data can verify all of this ????? I would love to know for records sake when the last Bluefin was caught by a recreational in South Africa.........I would have to say that Im sure it was DECADES ago.

But ja, you mention the Spanish and as we know, they are probably one of the most ruthless of nations when it comes to commercial fishing operations. They would sell their senoritas to get a foothold down here in SA. I pray that never happens.

it was certainly sold for a huge amount of money, I wonder what the actual fisherman(reffering to the commercial) earned for this fish? I am sure a far lesser number, which again would does nothing to encourage conservation.

@rob. I was fishing with Harry Finnerans son on their boat Eiland Urk in the mid 90's when we caught a number of tuna in the 30kg class which may well have been Southern Bluefin. At the time it was'nt that critical to id the fish, longfin being our target. We were well away from the rest of the fleet when this happened. I've caught bigeye and yellowfin but we were not 100% sure whether these fish were of those 2 species.

They were feeding on the surface and we took them on spinners and bait pole.

Who knows?

Hi Rob, i sampled a couple of Southern Bluefin tuna about 5 years back caught on a surface longliner i was on, we caught 5 the one day all around 80kg, the Captain told me that the southerns are not such good quality because they dont have a lot of fat, he said that the big eye actually get a better price!

Its a real pity their Northern cousins dont come down our way like they did in the 60's

Out of interest, the most expensive tuna ever sold was a Bluefin for US$220 000

I've never eaten bluefin, but big eye are bloody nice to eat and I'd take one of them on my plate before yellowfin!

Yeah, this was in SA waters off Cape Point, cant remember exactly but quite far! During this set the current buggered around with the longline and it sank quite deep and we got the bluefin on these sections that sank down, i recon they are in our waters but deeper down!
