My wife teases me cos after a spending a lot of time with the old wooden boats I pronounce  hake as "haayik" and kingklip as "Keencleep".

Where can I apply for my passport. I draw the line at drinking red wine and coke in the same glass though!

Perhaps somebody with more accurate data can verify all of this ????? I would love to know for records sake when the last Bluefin was caught by a recreational in South Africa.........I would have to say that Im sure it was DECADES ago.

So i guess that none of you have watched the program on the food channel about a canadian chef who also wanted to find out how the BFT is caught and sold. So he started in canada, on a boat where they went out to catch the BFT, after having lost one on their boat, another boat radios to them that they were on with a BFT. He rushes over there and watched them catch and boat the +_450lb fish. It went straigh on to ice. They then raced back to shore where the buyer came to collect the fish. The skipper was paid $4800 for the fish. Then the fish is flowen to the tsukiji market. Where the fish is cut up and sold to various jap chefs. In the end the whole fish was sold for $67000. Cool program but it just showed me that soon there will be no more BFT as on the market there were plenty!

An awesome, fish, and a shame that we do not get them in our waters anymore ! I would loved to have ticked that off my list !My Dad grew up fishing from Kalk Bay as a youngster, and clearly remembers these days, There was a boat called Speranza that fished from Kalk Bay, and also targeted these fish........I think the boat was owned by the Haire family if Im not mistaken ?

@ Kraken, I now remember Brynn very clearly, he used to fish with Bernie Wrankmore from time to time, a tall oke.........I also heard that he did well on teh longline scene in Walvis !

Spot on.

The vessel was owned by the Hares. It was/is built of teak with teak fittings throughout.

I wonder what it would cost to lay a keel and strakes with Burmese teak these days.

I have heard prices range up to R100 000 per cubic metre.

As far as I know Speranza is still in Simonstown but has undergone quite a few changes over the years ie. flybridge etc. The Hares were legends in their time!!

Rob, you are spot on...  my grandfather used to fish with the Haire brothers off Esperanza.  The brothers built the boat themselves and from what I've heard it was the Rolls Royce of its time.

Last I heard it was moored in Hout Bay and was being skippered by the younger generations.  anyone have any additional info about these good old days?  Pity these fish aren't around now.

Was a great article about it a few months back in the Ski Boat mag including a short splab about Esperanza.

Nice input guys...........makes me wish I was around in those days. I remember as a kid catching Mackerel in the corner of Kalk Bay harbour where she used to be tied up. A really beautiful and well maintained boat for her time.

Rob not sure if it was you or your old man that had the 16ft skicraft. Bummed a lift from you from Buffels to Millers a few years ago as we loaded up on snoek and were ploughing back so jumped onboard with you to get some weight off our boat. you guys were out catching fish on light tackle. 2 60 yammies on the back if memory serves me right . Cant remember the name of your boat.
