Garden Route Dropshotting

Hi all

Seems like there are quite a lot of newbies to dropshot fishing and that would include myself as well.

Went down to George over the Christmas period and had mixed success. Fished the rocks at Glentana and landed 5 kolsterte on the camo sandworm from Berkley. Used the "normal" Berkley jigheads which I found to bend open far too easily, even when hooking a kolstert. Got hold of the Berkley Nitro jigheads and fell in love with them almost immediately. All in all not too bad for a first timer as I was relatively pleased with the results as I specifically targetted the kollies. Posting a pic of one of the kollies, nobody was close enough to take pic, so had to do it myself.


So I am back in Jo'burg and looking forward to going down to George again in February for a wedding. So the question is where to fish with limited time available?

Will be staying in Wilderness.

Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

One of the best places in the area is Swartvlei at Sedgefield, there are some mean Leervis there.

Otherwise Knysna lagoon for all sorts, but can be especially good for grunter and Leeries.

spoons work well in the kleinbrak river. used dropshot minnows in knysna lagoon and saw my minnow being chased by what looked like a flathead...gericke's point also produce large blacktail on dropshot

You simply must visit Herolds Bay during low tide. Here's some pics (all species caught on camo worm):

Not sure what this is... Baby white musclecracker??? Maybe somebody can help.

Edit: Ugh, bunch of double posts and complaints about a proxy. Sorry guys, no luck from my side :( But do fish Herolds Bay to the right, you are almost guaranteed to pick up something.

I've given up on posting pics. I keep getting weird errors about proxy something and stuff I don't know enough about. Sorry. I emailed the pics to Gillie, maybe he has more luck than me.

there you go salty, and many thanks to gillie! you'll notice that i didn't catch any blacktails on the day, but they are around.

i'm having some trouble identifying the top species, one of the locals said it is a baby white musclecracker. maybe somebody here can confirm?

Hello Gents

I spend a lot of time plugging in the estuaries in the Southern Cape. Great fish to b had here. Knysna lagoon has big leeries. Sedgefield has good numbers of leeries 1-3kg and Wilderness is full of small fish especially when the mouth is closed. Very little water there at the moment with mouth open. i had good sucess at Goukama Mouth just after the floods in November. Got good size leeries there. You will find quite a few shad around atthe moment. Ballads Bay is very good. Private access but if you know someone give that a bash in the evenings. All rocky points with a littel foamy water give you a chance for them.

The Oyster Beds with kilometers of flat rocks with gullies has endless dropshot possibilities especially for blacktail, cob, shad, stumpnose and these sort of fish. Pan fish abound here.

Hi Johan,

Where did you catch at Herolds Baai? On the beach? The rocks towards Knysna or the rocks towards Mosselbay?

I'm going there for a wedding in December and would love to put in a few hours dropshotting

Hi Guys

I will be in wilderness this weekend and I am looking to do some drop shotting or spinning.With the storms where do you reackon would be the best place to go and if anybody is going fishing saturday please let me know.

I will be staying in wilderness I was hoping to fish swartvlei but that looks like its out.

Any other suggestions.

The Sedgefield lagoon, by the river mouth slipway, along the rocks on the left- good spot for spinning for leervis. Early mornings and late afternoons.
