Ek sal my setup post sodra ek 'n gallie hierdie jaar vang! LOL!

Nice! Got a 40cm wildeperd two weeks ago on my light setup and I'm trying to force myself to fish more with this setup, conditions are just not always favourable. I think we should run a light tackle gallie comp whilst the others are busy with the alfa/bravo comp, there's just not anything els of size around exept the odd steenie and belman.

I have fished for Gallies exclusively for many years and have caught my fair share of them ! Mantis can vouch for that ! I use a 10ft Purglass executive 300/2 with a Daiwa sl30sh. I load it with .40 mainline and a .55 leader. Sinkers is 2 or 3 oz. i use 1/0 Daichi hooks, but any sharp hook will do! When I fish for Gallies in spots like Dappats gat where they need to be hoiste up, I'll use a 2/o hook. Amongst kelp and bricks I make my hooktrace(.55) about 35-40cm long and my sinker trace ( .40) about 3-5 cm long. Reason for this is that the sinker trace cannot swing around a piece of kelp and get stuck, also when it is short like that, the fish picks your sinker up the moment you hook it and it does not drag on rocky bottoms in shallow gullies where it can get stuck, resulting in a lost fish.

Some of my Galjoen statistics:

Smallest ever: approx 5cm

Biggest ever : 63 cm (Weighed less than 3kg)

heaviest weighed fish: 5.2kg ( caught 5 in 5 casts of which four weighed more than 5 kgs, smallest was 4.8 kgs)

Most Gallies in a day : 22 ( Pearly Beach).....caught not kept!

Second most in a day : 17 ( Strand reefs)....Caught not kept!

Most consecutive fish : (9  fish in 9 casts)....Caught not kept!

Caught barehanded: 4 fish weihing between 2.8 and 3.2kgs ( June 1979, still have the pic)

My setup is as follows:

Shimano Exage 110H
Abu Ambassador 8000C(after 25 years still going strong!)
.45 Ultima Black Ice
No Leader
.6 Maxima Marine Green Hook Snoot(length vary depending on conditions)
.35 Maxima Marine Green Sinker snoot(length also varies depending on conditions - Like it to be as short as possible though for the same reasons Olaf mentioned)
Hook - 1/0 or 2/0 Mustad Ultra Point Red or Black

Now I just need to get the buggers this year.

Hi Olaf

That is some impressive stats!! I recon most of us can only ever dream of catching a 3kg, let alone a 5kg Gallie, it is however def a sign of the times!
That 62cm Gallie must have really been skinny to have weighed in under 3kg, still a impressive fish nontheless!

Now that is impressive, 4 gallies over 5kgs and 1 of 4,8 kgs in five casts, damm where have i gone wrong. But thats the thing of gallies its if the bigger ones sticck together, spoke to guy that spearfishes, he told me of a shoal he found at sea in Knysna, he shot the one closes to him, it weighed 5,9 kg, and as he says that was probably the smallest one in the shoal, he reckons there were fish of over 6,5kgs, question is why are the bigger ones so shy to bite. But then again they dont grow to those sizes by being stupid.

Unfortunately most of those fish was caught before waterproof digital cameras were part of our fishing arsenal! Very few pics, I do however have a pic of the four Gallies caught with bare hands, as well as a pic of my son holding a 5kg + Gallie He was six months old at the time, now almost eleven and a keen gallie fisherman himself ! The 63cm Gallie was caught at Kwaaiwater hermanus on a cast of less than 5m. Basically I dipsticked the fish ! I will try to get the pics scanned or something to upload. no promises however.
