Frikkie volgens my moét daar groot Karps in wees.

Hi Christo

i think that is a bit o an uninformed comment on the boilies. South Africans don't fish a lot of boilies because it's either a lot of work or expensive to buy boilies.

We fished a virgin dam in terms of boilies ie. Arabie in a Carp league and after only 12 hours of feeding all we were catching on was boilies.

Approaching a large body of water looking or big fish would require large volumes of boilies fed constantly and they will eat.

We fed a spot at 250m of Vaal Marina with Strawberry boilies and were using a jetski to drop the baits. By day 2 we dropped 6 baits on the spot with a jetski and before you got back to the bank you were on with anything from 3-5 fish and by the time the first was landed all 6 rods had a fish on - all in the 6-9kg class with 2 x 11kg fish.

One of our problems with our large bodies of water is that the carp have very little competition in terms of food and as a result of there being very few predators (relative to the size of the Carp population) the Carp population always explodes

This is why it's almost impossible to catch a 15kg+ fish in Bloemhof but they are caught from time to time by anglers in the right place at the right time ie the BFA team prior to the 2005 inaugural Carp Sa's where they caught 3 between 16-19kg and Donovan seeber with a 21kg fish from Bloemhof

Gariep for sure has monster fish and a dedicated 1 week feeding campaign and specimen approach in a well identified place with channels leading in and out (Christo's idea of a boat with a echo sounder)

:wfish Frikkie dit SKREE vir my Brookspruit!!!

Enigma I know it will be hell difficult to judge by foto's but I just want your opinion on this Brookspruit (part of Gariepdam itself) I'm talking about to target the monster carp with the specimen way and doing the propper feeding compain you talked about in your previous post. I personally think this is the ideal spot to do it at Gariep. Your insets will be appreciated and/or anyone elses for that matter.

Foto 1: The yellow arrow on the left points to the bridge (see other foto). The yellow arrow 'A' is the inflow/outflow to Gariep. It channels about 1.5 - 2 km through cliffs on both sides untill it flows into Gariep. (Frikkie help as ek verkeerd is). The blue arrow points to were we sat. There is alot of reeds on the right. The red circle 'A' is also cliffs.

Foto 2: The next couple of foto's was taken from where we sat. The green arrow points to where there are alot of reeds. The yellow arrow points to the bridge and where a river flows from. About 2.5 kg upstream from the bridge the river flows over rocks so the fish can't move futher upstream. The red circle 'A' is the same cliff as seen in foto 1.

Any idea on the depth of the water there?

We find that the bigger carp hold in channels of between 9-14m deep as the water is a constant 8 degrees in many dams at that depth.

Nothing less than 6m in our wild dams but 8-11m will be preferred

Foto 3: This koppie was straight ahead of us. I would say the distance over the water was about 250 meter. Red circle 'A' is still the same cliffs as in foto 1. The yellow arrow on the right is where the canyon is which flows out to Gariep.

Foto 5: This is the small 'baai' on the right of our spot. The purple arrow points to the water infront of the koppie as seen in foto 3. There is no in or outflows at this 'baai'.

Ps: The keepnet was for our barbel bait. lol

This was the average size Carp that came out that day. Carp 4.05 kg. What immediately caught my attention was the huge size of these Carp's mouths.

I would look for a spot where it levels out at around 11m where a table can be set for big fish by a constant feeding for them.

Sounds like just the spot for a monster.

Would start feeding with cooked kaboem to get interest in the spot (looking in Sept onward and probably 200kg per week for first 3 weeks) adding 50-100kg of 20mm boilies per week from week 2 then fish only boilies from week 4 and you'll land very big fish.

In Morocco they prepare their area for fishing pre-season by pre-feeding a ton of kaboem - pre-soaked for 48 hours and uncooked.

Followed by 300kg boilies and only then does fishing start
