it is most likely his last big fish he will keep.
he had to carry/ drag it the whole way and the girl friend had to push the trolley back!!!
it was too big to put onto the trolley with all of the fishing tackle!!!

in any case, baie geluk Jaun!!!!
jyt ons almal trots gemaak!!!

dis weereens n bewys dat n mens nie moed moet opgee nie.

nou vir die volgende 1!!!!

just some other advise to other anglers:

St Lucia is not what it once was.
But there are still some fish to be caught.
the time spend next to the water cannot be bought in a book.
you need to put the hours in.
yes you can get advise regarding aspects, but implementing them correctly and understanding them correctly is key.

identifying the right water is of paramount importance.
i like water which seems to be very busy!!!
i like water with constant waves.
they do not even need to break, but there needs to be waves!
this is what some might call, working water....others might say, they do not like it.
well we have proven that the water we choose is good.
long shots are not always needed, sometimes a 60meter shot is all what is needed.
but sometimes you need a 150 meter shot

hard work and perseverance is needed to be successful in this day and age on the beech of St Lucia.

never listen to what ill advised people tell you.
but listen for the fine points...... which they unknowingly drop

many anglers do not fish the same way as we do.
if they say, there is a side wash, go see for yourself!!!!

bait is also important.
live bait is key, but dead shad "whole" is just as good.

take notice of what is happening on the waters edge!!!
sprats do wash out at times, this will cause shad to hang around.

make sure, you trust your tackle and all knots are right.
make sure your hooks are sharp.

and, put in the time and effort.

i always wanted to catch a kingie.
during 2006, October i left my wife and went on a fishing trip to catch my first Kingie.
the wife asked, when do i plan to return?
my words were, when i caught my first Kingie.

well, 4 days later i got the 1st one of 28kg at Cape Vidal on the 13th.

since then catching Kingies has become easier since we know now what to do when and where.

;)

Welgedaan Juan....jy kan trots voel.::tight:

Thanks Ben.

yip i just had to get into the action myself!!!
so we drove down to St Lucia and met up with the children.

it was 6 days of hard work with some real fun.
the fishing was not on at St Lucia, but on the way to Maphelane and in the bay, things were good.

we wanted to fish close to, as possible to the bay "pets depending" so we had to park off at oom Piet se paaltjie "no dogs allowed further down the beech".

in any case, what a epic morning session we had.
high tide was just before first light, so we would fish the out going tide.

it was decided, that i would man the 4x rods, all loaded with dead shad, while Jaun attempts to get us some live shad.

Jaun would also see if he could put out a luve shad in the bay, while catching some live bait in the meantime.

so the sinkers went out and dead shad as bait.
while Jaun went with the girl friend to search for shad.

at 06:00 we had our first pull.
we were unlucky that the hooks did not set, in any case it was a Jonny!!!

this is how the shad came back!!!
properly mangled.

bait was not a problem, for some reason we had enough.
another dead shad was slid out.
the dead shad was barely in the water when we had another pull.

this time, i managed to land the culprit!!!
a small little garrick.
a quick pic and we set him free to fight another day.

it was a little while later when we had another pull, again a shark took the bait.

by this time, Jaun informed us that shad were scares at the bay and that too many boats were present to put out a rod there.

by that time, he had 4x live shad for us in any case!!
so he duly returned whereby we changed the dead shads over to live shads.

it was not 10 minutes after all the live shad were out, when the pulls started coming in thick and fast!!!

on the one rod, i had a strange bite "similar to big shad feeding"
in any case, we did not set the hook properly as the fish came off 30 meters from the lip.
it was a typical big shad fight.

while, i was busy reeling in this rod, the other rod went and Jaun jumped on it.

the hook was set and Jaun gave the rod to Landi who had to fight her first bigger fish.

2 minutes later and teh fish was high and dry!!!
a nice little snottie of around 7kg

the sharks were also wild!!!
taking our bait regularly.
we were running out of bait it seemed.

the rods with the heavy steel cable for the sharks did produce bites but none of the hooks managed to set, why we do not know.

we later had another pull on the nylon trace and also the last of the live shads.

Landi was again put on the rod.
after about 30 minutes Lani managed to successfully land a black tip shark of around 25-28kg.

this was it for the morning.
a epic session which produced 9x pulls in total.

there was just some special about the water we were fishing in.
the water just seemed not to run out as the tide was going out.
we followed the golden rule, never leave fish to find fish.
we did return the afternoon for another session.
it only produced 2x more pulls on dead shad.
sadly again no hook ups!!

we were trying out some different water, searching for the elusive working water!!!

it is not easy to find, and spending time at the water will teach one to speed up the search.
so, this working water cannot be found in a book!!!

with the high tide around 18:00 and close to neap tide, decided to fish maphelane bay.
the wife joined me for a session as Jaun was packing his stuff to return home.

we arrived at maphelane bay, with no one in sight.
as the afternoon wore on, the anglers started coming in slowly but surely.
many of them walking from St Lucia.

there was a good sized school of shad in the bay!!
they were having locked jaw, due to being hunted by the plenty of garricks present in the bay.

i did manage to get some nice live bait.
the live bait was set out but with no garrick takers.

it was nice to see the garrick hoarding the shad to the corner of the bay, whereby they would attack them into the shore break.
if one had a cast net, one would surely catch the garrick.
i was experimenting with traces and hooks, something different.
just before dark i replaced the live shad with a fresh new one with a 2x hook trace.
salmon like grabbing the bait from behind.

it was already dark and the tide was standing still when i had a aggressive pull on the live bait.
i set the hook and started fighting the fish.

the well known head shakes of salmon was present in the fight and when i landed the fish, i was not surprised that it was another salmon.

we kept this fish too.
it is a very nice eating fish, up to around 16kg.
after that the meat is not nice.

we did not have any other pulls and by 19:30 we diced to take the long walk back home.

the last morning session i was completely alone.
fishing was non existent!!!
no pulls nothing!!!
even the guys next to me, fishing live bait did not get any pulls!!!
so i returned empty handed home.

the afternoon session was at ingwe beech.
the water was looking good.
2x dead shad baits were slid out

while i was waiting for that pull, i decided to spin for a live shad.

with the spinning i managed to accidentally foul hook my first ever queen fish.
it was a mere 10 cm long.
unfortunately the hook went into the fish, coming out the other side and re entering the fish.
getting the sharp hook out was a mission.
by that time the poor little guy was already dead.

the hook went in on the back side, coming though and into the main body area as can be seen on the pics.
i thought it was a small garrick but the small spots gave it away as a queenie.

i was just about to walk back to show the wife my queen catch when my 1x rod went.

i scrambled to the rod as the wife was already holding it.
i was moving off at a good speed to the deep.

the fish moved to behind the back line where it sat for a while, before moving off to the deep.
in total the fish took about 600 meters of line.

it was clear, that the fish was not bothered of being hooked.
it would cruise out and when the drag was adjusted higher, the fish would slow down, changing gears and then speeding off again.
eventually with about 130meters of braid left, the line parted.

this was already 30 minutes into the fight.
it was clear to me, that i was fighting a loosing battle and there is always 1 fish that you will never succeed in landing.

ah well, there is always a next time!!!
sad thing is, these bigger fish always takes the lighter tackle, 35lb is light tackle.

so, what is next?
well it depends on when our next trip is.
it might be soon, early October

on this picture, the top shot of 280meters is just out.
sitting behind the back line

Eric has been getting some good fish.
in the last 2x months he succeeded in getting around 20 garrick in maphelane bay.

also some nice big shad, on live shad.

it has been good to see, that so many garrick have been hunting in the bay.
seeing them hunt is also something to behold.
nature is very pretty and we need to embrace it more!!!

here are some of Erics catches.

What is the news about Campsites at Maphelane? We had to
be evacuated to St Lucia when all the trouble started.

thanks Ben!!!

yip harde werk word wel beloon.

Doba:
as far as i know, Maphelane is closed "camping"
we have seen anglers come over the dunes to fish.
it might be day visitors who drove and parked and fished for the day.

so with it being quiet, fishing has been good for us doing the long walks down.
