jong, dis n lang storie!!!!
who gave the go ahead for the breach is unknown.
if the office of Babra Creecy gave the go ahead is unknown, it seems like they knew of it.
here is my take on it.
the lake is 1,5 meters below mean sea level "read it somewhere, long ago"
so when there is a influx of salt water into the lake, and we have poor rain fall inland, then the salinity of the lake will get too high causing all life to die in the lake!!!
the umfolozi has been rerouted and it now comes into the lake directly by the honey moon bend area.
so it is not running alongside the coast anymore "parallelly"
so if in flood now, the water will strike the beech around 90 degree which will assist in keeping the mouth open in future.
the umfolozi was in flood now recently which assisted to raise the level of the estuary "local area around st lucia"
but about 20 km north of st lucia is the narrows.
so, flooding the estuary at st lucia is one thing, allowing the water to go through the narrows and into the lake does take some time.
so if it was left, then most of that flooded water would have drained through the narrows and into the lake, keeping the lake fresh water.
but instead they decided, to breach to the sea.
so the estuary will now be draining its water out to sea.
some salt water will enter into the estuary as it is building up to spring tide.
this is good for fishing, but if it is sustainable we will have to wait and see.
there is speculation of a dredger to keep the mouth open, in doing that, salt water will keep on flowing into the estuary and lake.
so fishing will become good again.
but if rainfall in the lake catchment area is poor, then due to mostly salt water entering, the salinity will rise and all will be lost again.
was it the right thing to do?
i do not know.
it will be good for fishing in months to come.
financially it will be good for the town.
how good it will be for the lake, well we will have to wait and see.
