Ok, let me start, while I wait for a towbar to be fitted to my vehicle.

so sussie wanted to go down for the long weekend...
I watched the weather and the fore cast was not good at all for us.
wind does not bother me at all.....side wash does!!!
we arrived on Wednesday 19 September quite late in the afternoon so no fishing was done.

Thursday we set off north "more fish was caught north on my previous trip and a gulley was also present.
the gulley allows one to gather shad early morning.

the first morning we got some shad during the morning but no takers.

that afternoon we went down again.
live shad was to be had and the lines were set.
surprisingly for September we had great weather and good looking water.

it was about 17:30 when the rod went.
mom grabbed hold of it and I decided to fit my buckle for her.

she was moaning and growling about not wanting to fight the fish.
wel mamma, jyt geen keuse nie, lol

the run was quite quick and smooth.....which told me that it could only be about 3x species.
I was waiting for the hook snoot to be bitten through... but this did not happen.

the fight lasted for about 30 minutes, where we landed a nice GT of 15,5kg.

moms first ever geet.
it was all smiles, good to start a trip in this fashion.
a couple of quick pics and we set it free.
sommer chop chop and it swam away nicely.

well done my engel op jou eerste geet!!!

that afternoon we again set out north....it has been good so far.
again the rod went, but it was a slow pick up and a slow smooth run.....and so, sussie stood in line.

jou beurt is jou beurt.

about 20 minutes later she successfully landed a diamond ray.
it was not properly measured.
weight was guessed at around the 25-30 kg mark

baie geluk my girl...ons drie darem op die bord sover

the next day was a complete waist ….
massive seas out of the blue.
the gulley was non existent etc.
but, the shad was going wild at ingwe beech

so we set off to get our share of the action.
we could have caught 150 shad a day if we wanted too.
it has been a while, since we have had such a shad run.

that afternoon we set out 5x live shad and had live bait swimming in the bucket.

sad thing is.....not even a touch.
so we went home empty handed "big fish wise"

so Monday came and Monday went....
with the surf still big and side wash quite strong, we battled to keep the baits in the water.

being on the beech first and leaving last is a common thing for me.

the shad was still on and as we could not keep baits in teh water, we again turned to fish for shad.
so we got our quota quite quickly.

the boys persisted and fished teh whole day, enjoying the shad run.

how many they hooked and landed i do not know....

mom was great as always....she came and kept us fed....as the batteries were running low.

ok, i had 1x live shad left.
it was no use trying to slide it out again.....at teh same spot.

i eyed some good water about 400 meters away from us.
i just had to tryu again...the sinker just might sit....for a while.

the cast was made, and the sinker still shifted...but only slowly....so the bait had more time to be in before i needed to slide it out again.

so the shad was set out.
we then slid out other rods which had a shad belly and shad fillet.

mom again wanted to leave, to get some petrol for the boys.
i pleaded with her to stay, just 30 minutes but they decided to set off.....100meters further they were stopped in their tracks.

as the live shad rod went away.
the take was again quite quick, but the fish paused for a while before setting off.

1st mom decided to sit and watch from a distance but later they had to come back...to take pictures of course....

a short 15 minutes fight and a nice gt of 11,82 kg was landed.
it was my sons first GT.
the fish was landed about 350 meters from where the rods were.

first he wanted to keep the fish, which I allowed as it was his first.
but then he decided he wanted to put it back, but it was too late.

we got some nice pics at last..

the boys were now all fired up and just wanted us to put out all x5 rods.

I was about to cast another rod when my other rod with a shad fillet went away.
the hook was set and the fight was on.
this time the rod was handed to Pieter my sons cousin.

the fight was much shorter and Pieter managed to land another GT.
it was safely released and it was estimated to be around 6 kg.

well done Pieter

so we set out all 5xx rods.
but had no more takes.

it just shows you, that the golden hour is right place, right time and right bait.

we persisted and succeeded!!!!

the spots we chose was spot on this time.

that is the secret of fishing successfully!!!
you cannot buy this knowledge.
no book can tell you where and how.

only time spent at the water will get you there

ok, Saturday 22 September 2018, north again.....
early morning we only managed 3x shad.

just after 07:30 my rod went....again.
in any case, I set the hook and started fighting the fish.

it was a common Garrick style fight.
too much pressure and the fish tail would slap on top of the water.
there was no risk of getting stripped, the only risk was pulling hooks.
so I eased out the fight by taking the pressure before the drag kicked in.

this way the fight is more smooth.
I must admit, Garrick don't fight hard, I normally call them sissies and knives and fork eaters.

in any case, this fish did not give up.
it kept on fighting and I was surprised about it.
eventually I succeeded in landing the fish.
when it eventually got into the gully, the fish was exhausted and was lying on its side.

I normally keep garricks and I knew this was my biggest Garrick ever.
initially I suspected it to weigh about 12,8 to 13kg.

we then weighed the fish and it came out to be 15,12kg.
so a new PB Garrick for me.

so whats next?
I see every 24 months is get new PB's.

I don't know, but will have to wait and see.

dankie manne.

Awesome report boet..Nice fish as well..epic.

On that griek, I never see the insides of a big one nor get to weigh them, keeping only one in a few years which was gill hooked and a young fish also, but anyway, purely out of interest, was the big creature a male or female, did you check ovaries and also did you get a length measure (fork length) on it?

Shot again for your posts..lekker let me know..very curious.

yip we did inspect the fish.

it was found to be a female.
she has 2x bags of eggs.
I was quite surprised about the size of the bags.
they are quite small compared to a salmon of the same size.
they were full of eggs too, thus she did not have time to spawn.
did not measure her length, fork length should have been around 112,5 cm

hope this helps
