Fishing skis and Kayaks

Hi Guys

Looking at buying a fishing ski/kayak, but is it really worth the investment?  There are so many new ones out there as well.  Which is the best?

Let me know your thoughts

Hi Magician,

The feeling of freedom and excitement while fishing of from a fishingski is unbelievable and will outweigh any cost. (If you use it)

I suggest however that before buying one, you try it out. Any supplier worth his salt will lend you a demo. (In Durban this is normal)

I am not very famaliar with Kayaks but with fishingski's you have number of options,

The most popular being :

Tom cat

Neptune

Erics

Stealth

Popes

Here again you must test them yourself and see which best suits you.

I`m also looking at a ski and priced a ski at Tom Cat who do the Neptune @R5600 and at Stealth @R5800.Both are very similar but I am leaning towards Neptune due to the quality of his ski boats.

If you find any other info I will appreciate it.

Fishing on ski`s the guys tend to catch more fish shallow than we do on boats because of the silence factor.They murder the snoek and cuda,the other day I was on the barge battling for dagga and a ski about 40m away landed a dagga what turned out to be 38kg.The only difference is my fish hatch is bigger and I dont flip when I come in.

Ski fishing is taking off big time .I want to try it for backline fishing for the cuda and snoek.

Go for it Brett,

Both the stealth and the tom cat are very capable boats and there is also the Eric's fishing ski which is right up there with the other 2.

I suggest you take these boats for a test run and judge for yourself.

These manufacturers will gladly lend you a demo to test.

I own a neptune and am perfectly happy with it and you're right the quality is tops.

Does anybody know where one can view the 'yaks here in Cape Town.  I have checked out the stealth ski as well as the Tunny from Eric's.  The tunny seems quite impressive but I have heard that it can be a hard paddle when compared to some of the other skis out there. (kaskazi dorado)  I would like to check out the Tom Cat ski's in order to make a decent comparison before I buy.

Thanks for advise .Few questions

How much fish can the ski take before it is unstable?

How do you keep your live bait alive?

How easy is it to gaff and land a fish into the hatch?

I know the neptune is rated to carry 60 kg + in the hatch and a paddler up to 120 kg.

Keeping live bait on ski is problem , mostly we catch our live bait once were out at sea.

With a little experience it is not very difficult as long as you are patient. Don't try and gaff a tunny or couta while it is still green (not tired) because its going to pull you of the ski apart from this you still got to be care full, because you don't want any of those trebles (hooks) getting caught in your leg or hand and you've got to keep away from the teeth of those couta's.

Kingfisher in Hunter street offer free paddle ski clinics for beginners, this is a must.

stealth also offer a fishing ski and paddling clinic at a cost of R100.00.

My boet is treating himself to an early christmas present..

a three seater fishing JETSKI!!! (about R 65,000.00)

I am keen to try it out next weekend, at least you don't have to paddle!

The reason we go for a ski is because they get better fish shallow than we get on boats.

For the price that he is paying for the jet ski he could buy a good boat.

In a recent comp in Mozambique, ski vs jet ski`s the ski won hands down.They are much quieter so they nail the cuda,snoek and most other game fish that feed close.

Paddling is part of the fun

Anyway, my boet already has a Stealth Supalite fishing ski, so

maybe I'll 'borrow' it now and then.

I might need some advice though!!!

I have a gammy left shoulder that keeps popping out and dislocating.

Paddling might be good excersize to fix the inner shoulder muscles,

so I am very keen to give it a try.

I`m probably the wrong person to ask advice from ,I am only picking up my ski today so IF the weather holds I will be trying it for the first time in Durban bay for the grunters .I think I`m going to have to practise and get paddling fit before I venture out into the Groot Dam.

governing fishing ski's.

I went for the Tom Ski or Neptune as they call it.

Our club is liciencing ski`s and I have all the safety equipment so it should not be a problem,SAAMSA do not have rules in place as yet according to our safety officer but most shops are recommending certain things.

I`VE ONLY FISHED THE BAY FOR GRUNTER ON THE SKI AND HAVE PUNISHED THE FISH.

AFTER ENQUIRING YOU DONT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER AT ANY CLUB AS YET .
