Dit kan jy weer beduie Darius !! LOL

Just as interesting is the fact that the little Abu 6500 size reels that hold most of the word distance records, do not have extreme amounts of freespool, But they have extremely lightweight spools that start up easy and once going, is a lot easier to control !

A lot of freespool, can be both friend or enemy.

I have a while back started weighing the full spools of different reels and this makes for some rather interesting info - for instanse, the synthetic spool of the sl30sh fully loaded with Fireline (30lb) and a 0.60mm Maxima leader, weighs in at just 95 gram !

I will draw up a table to demo this, but on average it seems that just for the casting bit - the lighter the spool the bettter !

It is also true that we all don't  have the same casting stroke and that is where the adjustability comes in - more about that later ...

Cheers en dankie vir jou bydrae !

Good post.

In the wise words of "they say" .....less is more. This is coming from my own personal experience through using magged reels as well as centrifugal reels respectively. I found that with the centrifugal reels that they are smooth in casting and supply more than enough breaking power if set up correctly. This however doesnt remove the require awareness that your thumb needs some education for starting off the cast as this is the time the reels spins its fastest. For example the penn fathom 15 is a dream to cast with but when it comes to haveing a lack of stable footing it can become tricky. That being said, casting is easy peasy otherwise giving the user the freedom of taking ones thumb off the perverbial spinning spool. The mag reels I got into lately offered something diffrent. I used my penn 525 mag over the weekend reaching casting distances I have never reached before. Im not saying this is all down to the mag system but it sure gives you the convinience of setting up the mag "tension" to a level that suits your particular casting style and control ability.

I know some guys who can cast as far as anyone due to their educated thumbs and set up of their reels in conjunction. Ask the guys from the UK with all due respect:)... holistically we fish way harder than them and an uncontrolable reel for them is putty in our hands. I think that exact sentiment sums up reel usage. Some people can do without certain qualities in a reel as their muscle memory in terms of their casting style favours the way their reel is set up to achieve maximum distance and smoothness in casting. Be it mag or centrifugal.

Hi Ray - I have to agree with you on that one !

Simplicity works for me and as I had a pretty good idea that many users in this country will swim with their reels and bump & grind it on the rocks and reefs, I specifically chose a very basic but super effective system, without any external parts and without the ability to adjust while the sinker is in flight .

You test-cast your reel on your choice of rod/line/sinker weight with your own casting stroke and once set up to your liking, the reel stays like that and remember that for casting into freak winds or massive baits that you didn't perhaps think to cater for, yopu still have your thum and the cast control knob for emergency use !

Cheers !

Agree there. I suppose it boils down to each persons individual needs. Making it a interesting view of peoples tackle selection. I find the weighing of the spools particulary interesting and how is transfers to casting distance and speed. Will be awesome to see that chart you working on. We can always learn more.

The big boys of the casting world actually adjust the tension of the cast control "in flight" I saw it on you tube so it has to be true!lol kite fisher explained it to me once, half of it went WAY over my head but I got the general gist of it...

Wilhelm,

They set the tension knob and set the Mono Mag (different to this static mag) to have the spool spin for a maximum of 16 seconds.

In flight as the cast dynamic stabilises they screw the Monomag out reducing to Zero the effect of the Neodymium magnet. These super tuned reels when completely free spin to as much as 5 minutes.

When a spools spins long and smoothly it is ust an indication the bearings are good but not that it will cast far.

Tournament casters regularly replace shafts and cast control knobs because they have to touch to get maximum performance out of a reel.

Personally I prefer a mono mag as it can be released in flight adding another 20-40m of the Mag controlled cast

The fact that the small tournament multipliers used by the comp casters, are set up not to spin for much more than 16 seconds, should not come as a surprise, as that is measured by hand spinning the reel - a method that can't come close to the rpm's reached with a fully loaded rod releasing all that stored energy when recovering its shape.

Also take into consideration that very few casters can generate more than 8 seconds of flight time with their best cast launched at around 60 degrees for max distance - if you don't believe me, have a buddy put you on the clo k wile casting.

All that this mean is that we need not be overly concerned with our normal fishing reels spinning for minutes, instead we should aim for a smooth running reel that is under enough control, that we can really "bend it to send it", with the reel only feeding as much line as the sinker and bait can keep on taking away during the cast, thus not having the spool run in the sinker from behind, causing the problems.

Thanks for your input Craig !

Virtel jy my nou n ding!

Thanks Simon - it will be interesting to see how close my setting is to what you might find perfect for your rod, line, sinker weight and individual casting style .

Cheers !

Im very, very impressed!!

Your settings just about reg!

I threw constantly 120mtrs...(6 throws/casts) without any line 'ballooning' ~ its quite lekker to just **** the sinker, without having to thumb the spool.

I feel I can get a little more distance,so will have to open now to release some 'magnetism'.

The SS 100-100 is really 'working' for me now.

Baie nice...thanks for your effort and expertise.

Jip, it's a feeling you get hooked on !

I would suggest that you slide the magnet in small increments inwards towards the bearing holder and then cast it again - a little more work on the Trini A than on the other reels, but well worth the effort.

Idea is to get to the highest spool speed that will still allow you to cast flat out, without touching the spool while the sinker is airborne and this without taking away the little bit of sideplay we set up by backing out the spool tension knob a bit.

By doing this, all the control is by the zero contact magnetic force and none by the bridge between spool shaft and the spool knob.

Obviously you have to stop the spool by thumb when the sinker/bait eventually land in the water.

Enjoy !

Is there any drilling involved when this mag conversion is done?

Will the reel look the same on the exterior?

Brownie my reels were done by Cuban Cigar, no drilling. You can only see the mags if you open the reel. Very professionally done.
