Ive asked myself the same question . I have seen the carp spawn at homestead , there where plenty big carp right up againts the bank. I have tried for carp there on numerous occasions but always blanked. There has to be a trick to the dam. The same for Barbel , early in the mornings they can be seen on the surface across the bank but I have only caught a few small ones with earth worms.

I grew up in Ben on 1 and have only once caught a carp of 3 kg in late autim rouund 1991.. i have heard of the odd one coming out over the years and like you have attempted to catch the ones you see jumping..
the trick is the trace as the bottom is very silty and carp may take looooong to get to your bait..
I caught mine on tcp almond mielies.. as most of the benoni dams love strong flavours..
you can always "condition" the fish like our specimen friends do but then again.. I dont have the time and the money for that..
Id rather go to bronkies for theday then waste time at homestead..

Nope this one was a tad bigger than the fli rod one...
This one was caught on a tiger special 5ft rod while bouncing a plastic worm off the bottom.....The achivement for me was the fact that it was caught on 7lb line..

Hey Guys,
You might have a laugh but go ahead and laugh.......this really works.
Make yourself a sliding rietvlei trace of wich the main line is about 900mm long and your kook line is about 400mm on top and the bottom. Use a m00 mushroom sinker and 9555 no 8 hook. Your hook line should be no thicker that 0.27.
Now that we have the very strange trace out of the way, the spot is straight down kei road on the left of the reed patch..........distance is no more than 60meters if you can cast that long trace that far(ha ah ha ha ) and the bait is.......................my secret!
Take a can of sweet corn and sort the mielies (small flake and 1/4 pieces) from the rest of the can and lay them into BANANA and the half into MOIERS ALMOND .
When you are baiting up take a big yellow comp floatie and put the hook through so that you can pull up on the hook line.
(2). Take the mielie skins and put about 10-15 on the shank of the hook and put a small pip on the bend of the hook.
(3). Take the floatie that is now on the line and pull it slowly down on to the shaft of the hook.
(4). Do this with both hooks........ one rod BANANA and the other ALMOND.
(5). Your mielie bomb is SUPERCAST dry feed and is to be made so that it is very spoungy and soft.
(6)Take your top hook and stick it into the bomb and take the other hook and just hook the point of the hook into the mielie bomb so that your long hook lines don't get caught up on each other
I can almost promise you a fish and this simple method i have used since about 8 years ago when i was fishing SA'S at Roodekoppies wich has the same bottom as homestead and all the other dams in Benoni and Murrypark.

good tips here. Allthough there are areas in this dam where the bottom is actually gravelly and some areas that is sandy. Been on the dam with a fishfinder... We baited up a spot and unfortunately for us, someone was watching and the next morning we arrived to see them run down to our spot so they could poach of our hard work. Pathetic isnt it! Unfortunately they also caught a 9kg grass carp off our spot and proceeded to destroy the poor fish by forcing it into a keepnet... &%#*$#!!!!!!
A number of fish over 14kg have come out there over the years, and I believe the inflow area is quite productive sometimes (but that is a silty area).
It just takes a fresh approach and stepping out of the box abit to figure the dam out... but "pos en los" wont work so well...
Shouldnt be much problems getting barbel there, they're all over! Get some hempseed oil or anchovie oil and mix it into your mieliebomb, put some fishmeal in your "degie" and wrap it around the hook...!

i love catching all tipes of fish because different fish give different play, however i must agree with unlimited about the catfish.and as far as spinnekop2 is concerned. i will be testing his rig out today. (happy angeling):fishn:fishn:fishn

i tried that rig of spinnekop2 at homestead yesterday and to no avial.
unfornatly the rain apeared and we had to pack up and leave with nothing, but will try it one last time.

Richie fin I hear you I feel the same. the fish are there they need to be caught, but it seems as if this dam has most people stumped. By hook or by crook I am going to work this dam out even if I have to use a hand grenade hehehehe. I will let you know if i get anything there.

I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT NIGHT TIME WILL BE BEST.HA HA HA HA HA HA HA GO POUCHING HAS ALLWAYS GIVEN ME THE BEST RESULTS. I SAY THIS BECAUSE 4 YEARS AGO IF YOU WANTED TO FISH HOMESTEAD LAKE THE ONLY WAY YOU COULD IS BY DOING IT ON THE SLY!
