COEGA harbour tagging

So for the past month I have been watching a group of anglers fishing in the harbour(obviously have permits) and I must say that I am rather concerned about the handling of the sharks and rays. I have been watching them for a month now and this is what happens. I have been told that ALL fish must be measured , tagged and returned. These guys proceed to catch a shark, measure, and then leave the shark almost to find its own way back to the water. Once in the water the shark gets pommeled in the small shore break floats upside down for at least half an hour. The gentleman will then proceed to go cast standing next to it and not assist it. It really looks like either they are amateurs and should not be allowed to catch them or they just dont care. Secondly, I see bags of large elf leaving the water and into streep sakke? Is this allowed?
Unfortunately, i dont have a camera with me and my cellphone cant zoom that far.

I am led to believe, not confirmed, that certain individuals were allocated permits to research, catch whatever, for the aquarium i think.

its not all of them but a certain group that is frequently here fishing. Im no shark angler, but what Ive seen is not cool. 1 guy even landed a shark one morning, pulled it onto the sand , continued to have a rather"long conversation with fishing buddy" then attend to the shark which by this time had wrapped itself into a carpet.

As for the elf...elf is elf and plentiful, but rules are rules, i dont even know what the seasons are anymore but they land and keep which i thought was prohibited from the Port.

Boet that's way besides the point that you and I both know some of the guys that are allowed to fish there. Hell man some of them are on this forum.

@Grootvis. I would want proof of this bud. I'm not saying I don't believe you but the gents I know who fish there are all for catch and release. They are highly respected anglers. There are cameras in that place. If you work there get hold of your boss or someone in charge to get the footage for you. Once you have photographic evidence you are more than welcome to drop me a pm and I will forward you my e-mail addy.

@BEVID...like I said, there are different guys that come there to fish, woman, boats, individuals so it would not be right or fair to assume to generalise all that fish there. BUT, there are certain guys that are doing this and not once but a few times already. I work on the Oil rig that is currently there on the finger quay and watch them all day everyday. I am disembarking tomorrow, so wont be able to do anything now, but next time, ill try my best to get it on camera. the guys that are doing it properly(i hope these are the ones that you are familiar with) really do put in the effort and do it well. The others, I'm sure and guaranteed that it will make eyes open. It seems that the permits that have been issued to certain individuals there are only being used for ones own enjoyment and not for the purpose it was intended for. So just as long as people are aware of it, this area is not a public area as you know and that also means that there is no or as much monitoring of what actually gets caught there. If you see who the Ports security are it will be self explanatory.

dont get me wrong, All sharks and rays caught and certain fish are being measured , tagged and released, its just the handling that is is somewhat debateable.

I just hope to see a 50kg cob or something pulled in there one day.....

No wonder petrol is so bloody expensive. You sitting there watching guys fishing and not working. lol. I get what you saying. According to one of the gents I know very well that does indeed know what he is doing regarding catching, tagging and releasing there has been a huge decline in the amount of fish being caught. If this is due to "other" anglers not doing the job correctly it would be a shame as they do there best to minimise strain on the fish.

By the way, for interest sake, I was told there were only a handful of guys with permits(source:company within the port). I have noticed a whole lot more than just a handful of guys fishing there. Maybe they are sneaking in OR are guys working within the Port and get away with "fishing" every now and again.

Grootvis said he is not aware of teh seasons for elf, and has made an allegation that people are keeping elf.

I told him the season is currently closed.

What's your point? :fbash

The joys of SA living..... where corruption is king!

If you can bribe traffic cops it won't surprise me if some guys are bribing harbor security.

I'll go and try on Saturday morning and let you guys know.:fbash
