casting big reels.... how the heck do you guys do this???

:::S hi guys,

Until February I've never felt vulnerable fishing for non eds with my torium 30's, almost being spooled twice.

This lead me to enquire about the use of 40lb braid as backing to up the capacity of my beloved 30. After testing the breaking strains of the braid vs mono and your wise words this idea was shelved.

Now as per my post the other day enquiring about the Quantum30 i have a friend wanting to chase a blackray at st francis.... im feeling slightly under gunned but cant for the life of me cast a torium 50....no point buying one, my hands are just too small. I tested with a friends and I cant grip it at all. i can barely cast the thing 50m

...in fact im yet to hit 50m with the darn thing.... huge damper to my ego:fbash....and i dont plan on just playing gillie... 

BUT what my friend suggested was to try throw his 600h that he uses as a boat reel as it JUST FELT SMALLER...HIS 6'2 with baseball mits....I'm 5'3 with the hands of a girl! everything feels small to this guy!I decided to humour him.  for some reason i could throw it [think it might be the bigger shoulder of the spool]...only managed a best of 85m... no world record but with a reel of that size i was stoked! 

seeing as i wont be needing to cast 150m at the platform would the 600h do the job sliding a bait off deep water points.

otherwise some advice on casting a 50 would be great.

Only problem with that type of reel is the slow retrieve, sometimes hard to keep up with the winter sharks when they swim in. Pylie on a circle hook should be fine. 80m is enough at st. Francis, especially at night but in the day too

lol! the whole kite thing is beyond me... for now. Aqua the retrieve did worry me a bit but then i guess il just have to reel faster as it seems like the only big reel i can cast

I have average size hands and found it difficult at first to grip a Tor50 spool. Invariably you will have to use a windon leader, well at least I do. With the windon I reel the dacron section onto the spool where my thumb is during casting. This allows my thumb to get enough grip on the spool. Keep at it, if you serious about sharks it's worth taking the time to master a Tor50.

Agreed Tor 50 is a must have for certain fishing conditions. If you can throw it 90m with 0.6mm and a 1.5mm wind-on that will be good enough for most deep water points to get a pull.

Average sized hands r one thing, my hands are the same size as my girlfriends hands...my size went elsewhere lol. Iv caught a fair amount of sharks and rays on the 30 and always been comfortable...if this 600h will do it for me then I'll give it a go for now. The torium 50 is an amazing reel and I have used it as a swim bait reel... Un successfully so far but I'll have a look and keep at it and see if I can cast that beast

Try not spooling it full. The whole reason for the tor50 is bigger drag. If u can gooi it even 60m its enough at st frannies.

Bigger hands do help though. :fbash:fbash

Ja,thanks boep.... Iv thought about that but then the lines even further away from my poor thumb...my thumb just reaches the spool shoulder...just... My hand just about cramped trying the 50. If I don't come right I'll invest in some new hands.lol. I seriously dnt know why I can cast the one and not the other. I got the 600h for 400bucks and its been used twice off the boat.I'll upgrade the drag and have a look at what drag I'm getting

No reason you cant thumb the reel on the line...
Further i have unreasonable short fingers and you know what they say about a guy with short fingers... He's got short fingers....

If the reel is setup right, then the only time you holding the reel is before the cast, then it should be freespool until you stop it, a big reel wants to be casted, could be many factors that you struggled to cast the 50. Reel oiled alot, rod not matching the reel ect ect.

Balance is very important. Lol

And short fingers can't get them boogers at the back :fbash:fbash:fbash

I've found a 9ounce perfect and don't try nail it too hard just keep it smooth

In all hounest. I'm a full shimano fan but the size 30s are rather small and some fish will smash you. On my 30 I have just under 780m. But on a Saltiga or saltist 50 I know of guys with 900m+ of line. Don't get me wrong but a shimi 30 is abit small and a shimi 50 is to big for some and a daiwa 50 is inbetween and has a good drag and capacity.

I know this is a bit jumbled but hope it helps!!

try putting a piece of silicon rubber on the thumb for extra grip. i refer to the surgical tubing type rubber used on spear guns. it does offer a bit of extra grip when casting those big reels.

I agree with you Stuart, I have a Saltiga 50LD and I don't have the biggest hands in the business and I seem to cast this reel better than any other I have cast before.

It might be a good idea to try different makes and then decide on which suites you best.

I'm confused stapies??? Is what balanced? And the 600h had already had its drag upgraded...puts out 32 lb of drag...not close to the upgraded t50 but more than the 30.... If only they made a big reel that cud cast like my 30 :fbash

I was taking the pi$...lol He wanted to teach people how to cast far on a "balanced" setup...lol Only advice I can give is to practice! Also dont make the reel too full. That way you grip it better and grip on the dacron of the wind on like fluke said. It all helps. I just got a new reel that is big, practice practice and more practice. Also grip it on the side plate if there is enough space and try until you find what works for you...

If all else fails buy Blue Flu's aqua cat...lol
