Beginner : Long range casting/Bullet spoons

Hi, I am a bit of a beginner when it comes to saltwater lure fishing in general, Ive spent most of my fishing years bass fishing and rock and surf bait fishing.

I recently watched an episode on DSTV's ESA Saltwater where they were using bullet spoons to cast 130m+ and targetting gamefish ordinarily targetted by skiboats, I found this very exciting and am looking to invest in the gear to attempt it myself.

Unfortunately the program didnt delve too deeply into the specifics. My question is what gear would I need to acquire to facilitate long distance casting of this nature regarding rod, line and reel ... Additionally where to acquire the spoons (I am located in Durban) and what weight is recommended? Additional tips regarding technique and bullet spoon fishing spots are also very welcome. Any information is highly appreciated!

If we are talking the same thing here then the chaps were using Light and ultra light HMG rods and some grinders.

I have a Ultra Light Poseidon and Daiwa Capricorn 4500 with some braid. It works very well for me. Got myself some nice shad on it. The bullit spoons I get in 1 1/2oz from the tackle shops and the S bends I make up myself.

No fundy in this field, but my 2c worth.

You need a long cast spinning reel, it's not a normal spinning reel.
It's basically a tapered spool, that let's the line flow easier off the spool causing less "bumps" as the line leaves the spool.

You can still cast far with a normal spooled grinder, but the other model should give you more distance.

If your setup isn't set up properly you won't get that distance.

The thinner the line, the longer the cast, you should consider 10-14lb braid. Consider Stren "casting" braid, it's quite thin and by looking and remembering I think it's thinner than Berkley Fireline.

I use a Berkley Air XH with a Abu Soron 60 loaded with 12lb Stren Braid, and with a 3oz sinker and bait clipped to it I reckon I get in the range of 90-100m, give or take some.

With a spoon of 2.5-3oz I should get a little more.

With a grinder and long distance casting the longer buttsection (like with the freshwater rods) is a must for "extreme distances".

Raymond (on ESA) was using a 11ft rod with a Saltiga Surf Reel, filled with I think 30lb Daiwa Surf Braid, such a setup will cost you a small fortune.

One more thing, if you want to do extreme distances with lures and braid on a spinning reel GET YOURSELF A GLOVE, cause the braid will cut your finger when you load the rod as hard as you possibly can.

But like Trophy said, I'm not allowed to wear gloves for fishing, cause if I do that then pink drinks will be next ... and he's watching me ...::S

Get a copy of this month's Stywe Lyne magazine, there is an entire article on this very issue by none other than Barry Wareham himself - he is very deeply into this type of angling and the article gives you a lot of very solid information and detail regarding tackle and technique....fascinating reading.

Your other alternative is to use a multiplier reel such as the Saltist 30 or Saltiga 30S - you can use braid on these as well... teamed up with a 12 to 14 ft rod it will outcast the Spinning reel 9x out of 9! You need to be very confident in casting a multiplier though. I use a Medium Assassin 13ft with this set up and can really get into the "zone". Have acquired a few of the Iron Candy spoons recently and look forward to having a bash with these 4 and 5 oz bullets...

My 8000 Stradic on 10ft M Exage and Torium 30 on 11ft H Exage get the job done for me....

hi deanoza

i use this outfit every day, the daiwa exceller xxl 9ft with a shimano stradic 4000 with mustard 19lbs braid. as the rod has small eyes, keep your leader to the length of your drop need for your cast the longer the better and use 50lbs. this is about the best set up and reasonable priced outfit you can find. use the 45g "chase" bullet and you will have "ons" all the time buddy. tight lines

Chadman,

Where did you buy the Exceller XXHL 9ft and what did it cost?

I have a Ugly Stick also 9ft XXH and would like to compare it. I am extremely happy with the Ugly Stick.

H Neil, what is the model Daiwa reel illustrated in your post, and is it available here in SA?
I think it's the Saltiga surf, but I won't pay that much for a reel, and it's not a small reel either.

They use it on ESA.

with reefman on this. Multiplier (SH 30 in my case) with a 14ft and you can let rip!!

BUT.... If your action is off or there is a nasty wind, some of the bigger spoons can wobble on you and cause a nasty overwind!

I was also extremely impressed with that beautiful ugly stick of yours!!! That is what I call bang for your buck! Hopefully you can soon attach some form of game fish to the end of the line to really test the performance of that rod!!! If the weather improves enough we should try again this week-end!

I can do Saturday!!! It is about time that the weather clears up for a couple of days. Maybe this "typhoon" will blow the bad weather away!
