BAZARUTO MARLIN SEASON 2013

It was a real difficult fish and we had it for more than 15 minutes just beneath the boat but just could not get the leader. I urged Chrissie to put more drag but she did not want to go over the 40 pound mark. The fish took a rebreather and started on a all series of jumps once again...

Great show and fight, but we eventually get it by the boat for a quick release. Nice, fat looking fish that looked around 500...

The next day we had our good friend Dave Maclean along with his brother in law Andrew. Dave fished with us for years -  twice every year during the Marlin and then sailfish season. But his last trip to Indigo had been in October 2010, just over 3 years ago...one neither he or I will ever forget.

We got a bunch of nice fish that trip and there was loads of game fish especially big wahoo. Late afternoon of the first day of that trip with hooked the mother off all fish on one of the short lures. The Marlin was well over a 1000, probably in the 1200+ league. It was an unforgettable bite, then she jumped three times right by the boat and went deep. For the next 5 and a half hours we could never bring her up once. She never bulged even tough we fought that fish on the 80W absolute maximum drag (with #130 line) for over 4 hours of the fighting time.

After 5h30 hours of fight, in total darkness the leader chafed through. The 650 hard Momoi probably got caught on the corner and she was chewing it all that time. The leader was actually not chafed but flat cut about 10 cm from the hook-set. The leader was so flat that we did not even loose the lure, a bonito smoker that ended up catching us a 1098 lbs fish just over a month later..........but that is another story)!!!

Some of you might remember that report from three years ago, but for other reasons!
I do remember a lot of comments from you lot on the photos I posted that week and it was not about the fish!
That was the week we had the FHM swimwear photo shot...

Anyway, there was a very strong SE blowing the day we fished with Dave and Andrew and even tough it was unpleasant the change was good as the fish seemed to be coming out of it´s lethargy.

We started down south and the plan was to tack north with the swell. There were a few skipjack schools around but the first two hours were slow and we only got a wahoo and a great barracuda. At sailfish Bay I notice that the distinct water green / blue water line I had been working went right inshore and that there were two skipjack schools working that line half  mile north of us. I go right to 45 meters of water as as soon as I approach the first school there goes the long right lure and Andrew gets in the chair to fight his first ever Marlin...

It was a nice fish and a nice surface fight with lots of chases and jumps. Andrew did a brilliant Job for a first timer and eventually we bring it for a release and called it 400.

We worked north, caught a couple skipjack and YFT and got sharked on a live bait before making our way home. It was great having Dave back and looking forward to seeing the guys again for a all week next year!

Andrew with the old Williamson BMC 2 that did the trick.

The Marlin really seemed to have come on the bite once again, but sadly our guests for the next 2 days just wanted to do half days light tackle trolling and spinning for game fish. We had some pretty hot action up north with YFT and bludgers but the sharks were a nuisance. We spent most of the time spinning and light tackle dropshot and caught a bunch of different species including punkhandle barracuda, bludgers, snappers, different kinds of rockcod, small GT´s, cuda and loads of bigeye kingfish, such as the one below with Alberto.

As normal we had Richard and Billy Brake for the last charter of the year in mid December. It was their second trip for the season. We would also be fishing half days and switching between light tackle spinning and some Marlin fishing.

The weather was absolutely beautiful for the three days and we had a great light tackle spinning session in the morning of the first day. We got busted by 2 GT´s which were just to powerful for the tackle being used but released 8 big eye kingfish, 1 bonito, 3 snappers and a nice pinkhandle barracuda.

Billy was undoubtedly the big eye master...

Mid morning we decided to put the big lures out and about 40 minutes later we get a Marlin take the long corner tube. Richard has the left hand side of the boat and gets on the rod. The fish went absolutely mental and on it´s third series of jumps we saw the hooks go flying!:shock::shock:

Not even ten minutes later we get a bite on the short rigger BMC 2...it´s on Billy´s side and this time properly hooked. It´s a smaller fish and pretty soon we got it close to the boat...:)
