The next two days we mostly jigged and plugged and had an absolute blast. The session we had on the afternoon off the third day was humble to say the least. The guys were using Stella´s 20 000 with #100 braid but still could not stop most of the big fish we hooked, we did get some GT´s but got reefed, opened hooks and other tackle failure on no less than 11 brutes!:?

We ended the day plugging and in 3 drifts over a pinnacle up north had 3 GT´s, missed one, got reefed by a much bigger one and landed a small fish on the Ulua...

If the fishing the last few days with Craig, Ian and Steve had been phenomenal our last day was absolutely EPIC......actually the morning just unbeliavable!
We started plugging at the reef and within 15 minutes had 3 chases from big GT´s on the Ulua stickbait but no take.
At last we had a beautiful calm day and I started seeing fish jump about a mile outside of us. When we got there it was just mayhem...in between the dolphins there were yellowfin, bonnies, bludgers, yellowspotted kinfish and loads of cuda everywhere.
The guys were trowing spoons, stickbaits, going down with jigs and dropshoots and all simaultaneously got bent...

We got every single species mentioned above....and quiet a few numbers.
The next couple of hours were just out of this world!:)

Even I got to catch a fish or two and Alex got a nice yellowfin on drop shot.

The bludgers were like a pest...

Once we had enough we decided to run way north to explore some reefs I had marked. But it was pretty slow and the water was just to clean to fish that shallow. We trolled back and when we got some bonnies decided to live bait. We got sharked and the circle found it´s way into the corner of what was probably the biggest Zambezi I have ever seen.

Ian got into the chair and with the 80W at full taps it took us close to two hours to get the fish to the boat. Unfortunately I did not get a pic because we broke it off on the leader to soon but I reckon the fish was close or over 900 pounds.

We were so bored during the fight we past the time feeding bread to a remora that was hanging around the boat!

In early December we had Chrissie and John Jackson from the States on their first visit to Bazaruto. They are experienced anglers with a lot of water behind them and regularly fish in some of the worlds best Marlin grounds. This year alone they were on 28 Marlin releases.....but, a grander still eluded them and thus they choose to come to Bazaruto...and they were very very close to hooking a fish of that caliber!!!
However they did not experience Bazaruto at it´s best. After such a great it was time for things to sow down a tad....they were there but very lazy. The enormous amounts of surface bait (big and small YFT and skipjack) we were seeing everyday for the whole day did not help as well and the continuous high pressure systems were surely taking it´s toll on the bite!
Still the numbers for their trip were OK and we did raise one that could have gone over the mark and another 3 that were 500 or better!
In total they raised 9 Marlin, had 5 bites & hooked and released 3!

Actually there were loads of game fish around and everyday we got a bunch of wahoo, dorado, cuda, skipjack, bonnies and small and big YFT

Because the marlin were acting so lethargic we did try and live bait a lot but it was really hard going with the sharks that were all around the massive bait schools that were on top for most of the time.

John released the first Marlin of the trip, a small fish that took the Express 5 minutes after we set the spread in the morning of the second day!

On their third day we raised what I think was probably the biggest fish we saw the all season.
We had started the day live baiting but after being sharked for the fourth time we decided to switch to lures. Just before 10 we raised a nice one on the Apollo Evil but did not get a take. There were two massive schools of small YFT and skipjack mixed together. I was keeping away from them as we would hook Yellowfin anytime we got a bit closer, but still kept myself in the area tacking back and forth between the two. The sea was flat calm and the tide had just started to push, the water was an absolutely beautiful electric deep blue color. I was doing a tack from deep to shallow when she appeared behind one of the long lures.

She appeared just after 11am....  twice as if in slow motion and dissapeared! I had goose bumps and the hair on my arms were straight up. I knew she could very easily be that fish that John and Chrissie (and everyone else) are after. It was very tempting to turn around after she faded for the second time. But somehow my instincts told me she would be back and I maintained my tack. And back she did come, this time with a much better attitude and we all saw her enormous mouth inhale the small lure. She was a real beast and it seemed everything happen in slow motion after that – the clip opening, I accelerated and John got in the chair. The only thing that was happening very fast was the line coming out the reel!

But all of a sudden it stopped, the fish simply come off...or else she was never hooked and just holding on to the lure – has we were retrieving the lure back she once again come up behind the lure close to the boat, but this time she faded never to appear again!

Ohhh well, nice to see one that size anyway!

Life´s not so bad when you chasing 1000 pound fish for a living and the view from your Office looks like this........;)

However, the highlight of the trip was early the next day.

Finally there was a moderate SE wind blowing which was a welcome from the flat calm days we were having. It was nice to feel such a breeze and we had hopes the weather might turn the fish on.

We started at lighthouse and I did a long tack shallow to cut and go deep NE where we had seen the big fish the previous day. We had been trolling for about 15 minutes when out off the blue both the short (bonito smoker) and long left (express) lures were taken. It was messy and bumpy and no one had seen the bites but right after we had two Marlin jumping on our stern – double hookup!;);););)

Chrissie jumped in the chair with what we tough was the bigger fish and John fought his standing up. There were a few tense moments as the lines crossed but eventually all was clear. John´s fish looked much smaller so I explained to everyone the plan which was to release that one as fast as possible and then concentrate on Chrissie´s fish.

Within 15 minutes we had John´s fish by boat side...

We turned and chased Chrissie´s fish which was now very far from the boat. As soon as we got on top of it she bolted off...
