okay to get some reaction
i like the post from revo we need to look at the bigger picture here.
i am an indiginut and to say cause one recource is more attractive than other is short sighted. to say one fights better than another so to let it go is irrisponsible.
think on the issue of the alien plants n the country at the moment, the increase in fuel loads, reduction in indigenous species etc is having a massive impact on not only ecosystems but economics alone. last year alone KZN spent over R150 000 000 trying to remove alien vegetation.
yes we wont get rid of it but we can stem the tid we are expierencing.
with regards to bass, trout, and carp look at studies in the eastern cape and their are many river systems and streams where indigenous minnows and fishes have been all but eradicated. remember the removal of one species and the ntroduction of another that the habitat is not used to will greatly upset the system.
i dont know about you guys but i would rather not have something that should not be there than have it to the detriment to the rest of the ecosystem. remember that word conservate.
also water systems have so much carrying capacity so when an aggresive species takes over and dominates there is a reduction in food and space for the rest. you could adopt an attitude of strongest survive, but look at models that say for every one species removed another ten are effected.
by no means am i saying that bass, trout etc are bad get rid of them all what i am saying is that i am shocked that it appears that people would be happy to lose something indigenous because it does not interest them.
also think if the natural food stocks are removed then where will those huge apetites get their next meal.

What are you doing as an individual to change the current situation with Aleins in South Africa?
Please remember I am not talking about eradication but rather about management or making the change that we don't get mass netting in places like HArties and Bloemhom where all species are netted indescriminately? If you want interesting reading have a peruse at the carp speciemen threads from the last 2 weeks just look at the one with all the pages on it.

you know aliens have settled in every aspect of conservation you can find examples for avine, mammilian insects, reptilian, fish the list goes on.

Im with LGF and Loams on this...guys you two, had great posts on this...I think inland tackle shops makes more money through selling bass tackle and equipment than a tackle shop that sells pap gooi stuff(correct me if im wrong) so i think if i can speak for the guys that owns tackle shops, they are very thankfull to have a wonderfull fish like this in S.A. cos they can take money back to their houses( i would like to hear the stats of any tackle shop owner, to hear with what fish species they make the most money, that would be very interesting)...And i must say, i think if i look at my life and what this fish did for me in the last year or two, im going to tell you CATCH AND RELEASE these fish.

Just remeber you are still very new to the sport and what do they say "ignorance is bliss".

Be very very sure of your facts - no one is talking about eradicating bass from our waterways just managing them -remember bass are not indegenous to SA waters - they are potentially lethal to species diversity - again do some reading then come back with an argument so as why we have to release bass and not use $$$ as an excuse...........
