Posting photos of fish on fishing forums is very tricky stuff. If you post a photo holding a spring scale with a little dead 200g bass hanging off it, standing next to your float tube (entry level with patches), some OK Bazaars special rod & reel combo and your Datsun 120Y in the background, with a caption like – “I love bass fishingâ€, you are going to get an awesome response. This is because every Tom, Dick & Harry that has caught a fish bigger than yours is going to congratulate you and give you all sorts of advice on how to improve that catch. Even if you ate the fish, you might even get some better recipes sent to you via private message or email. With all this fantastic advice and praise comes an untold deep, dark and very serious condition – ‘God help you if you ever DARE to catch a fish bigger than my personal best’.
I have been fortunate enough to catch some really good fish in my time, and have quite a nice collection of photos of those special moments when I did have a camera with me. But when it comes to submitting these photos on a forum, BEWARE! Some guys would rather see a photo of their girlfriend/wife doing the ‘wild monkey’ with a dude a good couple of inches bigger, than see you standing there with your monster fish.
Herman Nel’s new SA Record 7kg bass:-
When I saw Herman’s photo, my first reaction was “WoW, Awesome Fish!†Yes, I did feel the ‘goggo’ bite a little bit when I read the 7kg bit, but managed to get it under control.
Then with time, cracks started to form in the story and doubt crept in, and a war broke out, and this upset me quite a bit. All parties were guilty, Herman, other members and myself included. With time and MANY posts later by Herman, I have come to realize that he has a very sharp Afrikaans sense of humor and suffers from a bit of ‘Chuck Norris Syndrome’, but other than that, no real harm was meant in any way.
One thing I have to give you credit for Herman, other than catching that big fish, is that there are not many people out there that could take this amount of ‘hammering’ and keep coming back for more. Well Done! ïŠ
