As I had so many requests to show the magbrakes for the other popular reels on the South African market, I had a chat with admin and it was suggested that I do seperate threads on the different series of reels, so that when it eventually finds it way to the "reel services and tutorials" part of Sealine, it is grouped in a logical way to make searching for info on a particular reel, so much easier for everyone.

So we start with the very popular Toriums ...

The magbrakes are produced in two very different styles, one covering the Torium16/20/30  which are really the same reel, just with different spool and frame width, but the same diameter and the other series for the much biggerTorium 50.

The Torium 50 presented me with two generations with a difference in the moulds used for casting the frame, that forced me to make up two versions of their magplates.

I won't go into a long lecture here, but rather say a bit with each photo I post and then answer the questions of members as they pop up.

Cheers and I'll start posting a few pics as soon as I get  the 3G signal sorted to post from my phone !

The 16/20/30 can use up to six magnets, as the magbrake is located in the left sideplate next to, but not interfering with the clicker mechanism, where there is plenty of distance between spool and magnets.

As the size of the magplate is ample and the six magnets are stacked in three stacks of two on top of one a other, you have lots of adjustability with moving the magnets outward towards the outer circumference, giving more control.

Reason for this is twofold - the braking radius becomes bigger with more electrical conductive material(aluminium) moving through the magnetic field and as the sidewalls of the spool is dished towards the spool shaft, the further outwards you slide the magnets on the magplate, the closer they come to the spool and thus the stronger the effect.

Now lets see if we an post a pic ...

The Torium 50 is done in a completely different way, as it may have become too expensive with a bunch of magnets to control that heavy spool full of line, from that distance.

So, I found the perfect spot in close proximity inside the frame on the right side , as the larger diameter frame left just enough space to fit a magplate.

The clearance on the rightside is a lot less, so I went for a recessed magplate and used very flat magnets, so as not to let them touch the spool.
Remember that the spool moves closer to the magbrake on this side when you back out the cast control knob to let the spool run nice a d free, so checking clearance is ultra critical !

This is the one-piece generation - shown with four magnets, but most of these reels take two or three. Some anglers choose to fit all four for night fishing.

This is what it looks like ...

And here is the other generation of the Torium 50 that caught me by surprise a while back when I opened the reel to mag it and discovered this one that required a split magplate !

I only use Shimano. Is this "upgrade" going to allow me to cast further?
Hi Bevid !

As far as I can see on Sealine, you already catch more and bigger fish up in PE than all us Capetonians put together - maybe we should fit you a "Special Edition" magbrake to make you cast shorter and catch less fish ? Lol !

Jokes aside - every single day, I get feedback from guys who I fitted the magbrakes for, that tell me how much better and easier they now cast with the reel set up properly.

Extremist here on Sealine is a classic example - I did his Saltist BG40H for him a while back during a presentation I did for SSEC-WC and just the other day he told me that he just can't cast his Trini 30A anywhere near the distance and ease he is getting with the Saltist since we fitted the magbrake for him.

I won't quote him, but scroll back to his post on the Trini A magbrake thread I started yesterday and it will speak for itself.

Also not just a system for beginners or bad casters - the pros also use it to great effect !

Cheers !

Very interesting. Were can one buy the magnets? Are they a specific size and thickness?

Hi CharlesF - apart from size, thickness and strenghth, you also get magnets from different materials/technologies/charachteristics that I sorce some from local importers and some from abroad.

It is also a very special marine grade, but strongly magnetic stainless alloy that the magplates are cut from.

If you need any more info. please PM me.

Cheers

Can one purchase a mag kit or must the reel be sent in.
Hi DieterW
Some of the installations, including the Torium 16/20/30, are rather critical and I prefer to do it myself and do the initial setup, after wahing out the spool bearings and a relube with ReelX, at no additional cost to you.

For aditional info, feel free to PM me.

Cheers

On the Torium 16/20/30, you can just send the lefthand sideplate to save on courier cost and if you are rather handy, I can the explain to you how to do the setup when you get it back.

Cheers

Hahahaha. Cool I get what you saying. I think I might just look into this. Day time is not the issue. It's casting at night. I tend to push the sinker harder in the dark and end up with a good few loops on the spool. Reason is obvious. I can't see when it hits the water to stop the spool. This mag system would seem to help prevent that.

Hi Bevid - I'm in the same boat there !

I find that my balance, timing and judgement about how hard I'm casting, all go out the window, when fishing in complete darkness and in the past when I did regular night fishing for gallies at Blombos, I fitted a mini lightstick to the hooktrace just above the hook, to help with timing and to actually "see" my sinker and bait travelling and landing !

Just to prove it, this past weekend when I did a hour or so of fishing in the darkness, I managed for the first time in years, to cast a bit of a "nest" with my little sl20sh, despite that light little spool and centrifugal brake - just shows !

Which model and size Shimmie are we talking about here ?

The 30. I tried using a glow stick but it's not very visible when the sinker goes past the 150m mark.

Brêkgat...Jy mag maar..:hyst:

And I heard that "medesty is his biggest virtue" ???

Don't worry Benna, we can make up that "special Edition Mark XX magbrake" for Bevid - you know the one that "hoe harder jy cast hoe korter gooi hy "

OR ... Jy moet dan maar 'n groter lightstick aansit boet !!! ;)

Hi cuban

Have you magged any okuma Cedros yet???

Really want to mag mine. Spool spins very fast! And I really have to tighten down on the spool tension knob to cast smoothly.

Let me know..

Thanks
