I have always battled to land fish on other guys rods , traces and especially knots.
Like you say, confidence in your own gear allows you to know how much or how little pressure you can place on the fish.

Even when handed other chaps rods on the boat, I generally re-tie the traces and re-do the knots.

I think you are a prime example of this theory judging by the amount of fish you have to your name.

Absolutely...most folk dont realise this simple fact.To land big fish like those Tuna of abt 60kgs, requires some stamina from the angler as well as secure knots and dependant tackle.As those Tuna get larger to the 100kg mark and above, you are really sweating buckets
Shark angling similar and if not more demanding.
