Will the Poaching ever be stopped

Driving towards East London earlier this morning I spotted these 2 poachers on the bridge crossing the Fish River.

It amazes me that nobody has done anything about this as I have seen post on sealine about them before and according to locals they are there everyday.

They're always there, I travel that route at least once a month.
That was not all the fish, there was at least another 20 laying on the grass behind the barrier

It makes me sick
Bud we normally see eye to eye. However here is a thought. Do any of those guys standing on that bridge selling grunter or any fish for that matter have a job. I don't think so. It's their only income. I do however feel the guys you mentioned in another thread (poachers) need to be seen to. They make more money on one good dive than these poor blokes make in a year.

Problem is they are Gill Netting and the big fish are sold and the small ones go home to the pot and as you know a gill net is indiscriminate.

Seems the local authorities there believe there is an inexhaustible supply of Grunter and Kob in the river.

One day soon you'll only get Barbel and Carp in the River as no-one will buy those

maybe that is a bit strong and I don't really mean it but I have never caught a grunter and I fear I never will let alone my kids.

I accept that there are probably very few opportunities for these guys to earn another form of income , however you cant say its fine because the divers make more etc....where does it stop then? By that same logic we can then say the divers arent that bad because at least they are not bombing ATM's and at least the ATM bombers arent shooting cash in transit drivers......and at least the CIT robbers are not in government

Poach a few fish for the pot if they must , but selling wholesale next to the road is inexcusable and is probably an easier form of income than other legal labour forms.

Just my view..

I by no means say what they are doing is right. I work for Tracker and believe me there is no such thing than one crime is smaller or bigger than the other. We who have been in the trade long enough know crime starts small. My point is simple. I would rather "bust" the people buying from these so called "poachers" than trying to get thru to them. Once the buyer is stopped the seller would have no market.

There is obviously a demand for these fish. This means that people with money who should really know better are driving this. Stop buying and kill the industry. I am more disturbed by the people buying than the people selling. The poaching is wrong, but the fact that there is a market is worse.

if i must stick to the law why don't they have to.

Easy to talk when you have a nice meal when you get home from work. Have you ever gone hungry? Have you ever had to look your kid in the face and tell him that there wont be anything for supper tonight. Lets stand by and watch another mans kid starve to death so that your kid can catch a grunter.......why don't we?

well from the above posts it seems that the poaching will not stop !! As long as the poachers are poor and unemployed its ok to support the poachers and as long as they don't make too much money REALLY???? well mate you can dress a pig in a suite but its still a pig .
If its a perlie poacher or a rhino poacher or a subsistence poacher they all shit in my books. That goes for the white guy in his pajero that argues that its cool to take an undersize steenbrass because he only gets to fish once every 2 month or pays the poor unemployed guy to pump his worm @R5.00 each its wrong

What is being said is : It’s fine catching for the pot/pan or sell their catch because they are going hungry, but as soon as an angler on this forum keep his/her catch they get attack for not releasing his/her catch. What is the difference; because we can afford to enjoy angling we must release our catch because it’s wrong keeping it.

That’s what I call double standards “Sorry that’s what I call Bullshit” the law is the law no matter who you are.

For the price we are paying for fish at local shops/markets their will be a demand

The reasoning of our government/authorities are as easy as : Take away from the white by closing angling spots/areas and leave the poacher be. I will even go further by saying target the soft targets because they have an address and can afford to pay the fines.

BULLSHIT I personally have had enough of this, At Sundays River over December 2013 more than R18 000-00 worth of fines were issued, but not one fine was written to the locals catching under size fish and selling it.

And we are fine with this???????
