From 2 days fishing at "Platteklip" ta Wilderness beach I caught the following species on sardine bait:

Kabeljou = 3kg (taken and braai'd, all other fish released)
Mullet
Strepie
Striped steenbras
Sea barbel
Stumpnose
Evil eye toby
Pinkie grunter

An awesome spot that I'll be visiting more this holiday - going to try a nice livebait from there soon!

The kob was caught on pilchard bait on a 1/0 hook on 5.5kg line with a 9" Shimano rod and Okuma reel. Time of catch was about 10pm on a receding tide, about 90 min after full high on the 26th of Dec.

And caught a nice 90cm sandshark yesterday evening.I left at about 23h00 after catching 3 seabarbel in a row.

Great catches, just a note, dont hold a flatfish by the holes in its head, those are its gills.
Just a tip.

That's how I have always seen rays handled by all other fisherman that I have seen catch them.

I have done some googling and this is the generally accepted way of handling them, by gently holding them by the holes on top of the head, otherwise known as a spiracle. This hole is not the gills, as these are on the underside of the ray. There is also no delicate tissue or gill filaments near that hole and they can harmlessly be handled like this.

holding them in the spiracles isnt a good idea, it pressures the back of the eyes... Did you notice how it freaked out when you lifted it there? Yup its probably blind now... its an eagle ray btw
