Why's this still happening

Dunno if anybody heard but some serious levels of various toxins, of which DDT is but one, has been found in the Rietvlei dam.  This dam suffered a similar disaster not so long ago, killing off most of the aquactic life-forms and some of the bird and animal life too (Rietvlei Nature Reserve).

All the Bass died, All the Yellows died, carp and some barbel was the only species that seemed to have survived the ordeal.  So, the YFWG reintroduced Yellows to the system and an organization "Friends of Rietvlei" was created.  Now not even five years later and there we are again.  Standing with another ecological disaster in our hands. 

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE, how can this kind of thing happen twice in one decade to one such an important water source?  What is it that the Goverment doesn't do or do that makes it possible for a disaster like this to take place with the frequency that it does?

We've got His Honourable "Kortbroek" and his bunch of :clow's, making new laws  and regulations governing the usage of natural resources that sometimes mistifies the borders between insanity and idiocracy, having said that some of these are very necessary and rightfully important, but then something like DDT and other toxins reach extremely dangerous levels in an important water source like Rietvlei, and you have to ask yourself, "Does these :clow's know what the Hell they're doing?" and the probable answer would be, "What the question?"

This kind of thing makes me soooooooooooooooo:cens:swear, and whats worst is that, all we can do is jump up and down make noise and beg, plea and even threaten, but we're doing this all as spectators to this sad circus of idiots performance.

Government should really start taking things like this very very serious, they're the only ones that has the resources and the mandate to stop things like this happening, but the problem is THEY have to be SERIOUS about IT.

I think it's time we took a leaf out of the chinese book and implemented the death penalty for the clowns in civil government who are all too clearly not doing their jobs. At the very least criminal charges against the people (not the companies) responsible for the spillages AND the officials who approved the systems that allowed these spillages to occur. When I refer to people responsible I mean the TOP people (Directors etc)in the relevant companies.

On a similar note does anybody have any information regarding the criminal case against ACSA officials with regard to the jet fuel spillages into blaauwpan? The last I heard was that criminal charges had been brought against some of the officials.

Giving kortbroek something to do and hoping he gets it right is like scratching your head when your ......LS are itchy. It helps nothing. How easy it is to pay R50-00 to look the other way , maybe we should find someone and pay him R50-00 to look the right way. My opinion not sealine

When I read this kind of stuff I at first get very angry because I agree with the general sentiments expressed, but then when I think about it I just get depressed because I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.   It’s not Governments that are to blame, yes they are probably the ones who can have the most influence, but it is really the attitudes of people that cause this.   Governments are also people.

Most people don’t care one ounce about the environment, because they are selfish, chasing their own goals and objectives, profit motives and believe this will not impact them immediately (they think)!    We all have different value systems, for so many reasons as well.

 

Don’t make the mistake to think it’s only a South African problem, its not, but it is true that there is a much greater awareness of environmental issues in some of the more developed countries. Things like recycling are already entrenched there, but still not everybody does it.

 

We are wrecking the world, and a huge process of education and creating awareness is needed to try to slow it down.

Yes, given it happens all over, but for .... sakes this is OUR COUNTRY, OUR RESOURCES and we need to take charge, march up to these A-holes and arrest them publically and drag their sorry behind to jail.  I would also love it if the entire court procedings could be held with these idiots standing knee deep in the muck of the disaster they've caused or have turned a blind eye at, this is BS, they better clean up their act (and not real soon) they better have done it already, cause I for one am getting sick of their "Propblem, what problem?" attitude wrapped in corruption rive bribes and kissing ass....

I feel like organizing a march to (not hand over a memorandum, but) to get the responsible ................. ........ to justice, enough is enough and we're way beyond that!

But just have a look and see, Perlemoen, tons of our resources being illegally poached, shipped to the east for plenty of money just so that some poor "kwagga" can hapily continue in ignorant bliss thicking that it'll improve the size of his short little insicnificant member, hey if that doesn't work "Oh me try Rihgnou hon" and there's three dead white rhino's lying blown up in the heat of the sun in a reserve that's suppose to protect them.

Shark fin soup, WTF is this? Have these deranged idiots not done enough damage to mother earth and yes most of the time Other Countries's resources?  I hope she gets agutated enough and bites the entire counrty so hard in the ass that it makes the two A-bombs of 1945 look like an apple falling on Newton's head......

Comrade Raggie and others,

I really hate sounding so negative and its good that you guys have the energy and enthusiasm to do something about it, so you have all my support and best wishes.

Perhaps you can use this site and other means to influence people’s and/or Government's behavior and I’m sure if we have enough time we will see some change in attitudes and behavior.


I have been around this place for about a month, and how many times have I already seen people make comments like “just don’t get caught[/i]” in relation to fishing regulations…..that is just one attitude that I was referring to.   

 
There are probably as many reasons for this as there are people, but this is only one perhaps small part, of the problem you’re referring to.

Truely correct there and a very valid point, and perhaps by our (well at least my) actions we'll change the attitudes of the "just don't get caught" members.  Lead by example is what I intend doing, and perhaps then by doing so, we'll get to a point where it's not just talk the talk but walk the walk!

You, me and everyone else is responsible for our own actions, but our actions doesn't only affect us,....................................... let me put it this way; I'm responsible for what I do or don't do, but what I do or don't do, affects not only me and not only the people around me, but also the people I cannot see that might want to enjoy the same thing tommorow and last but not least the environment in which I'm doing or fail to do the correct thing.   Added to this is the perception that possible good-do'ers might have or might have had but I went and changed that to the detrement of all those involved including nature herself. 

So I'm with you on that, but like you said it might be a small part of the bigger problem, and that doesn't mean that it's less important by no means.  Lets just sort it Out, cause enough is enough.
