Dave,
You know, they are very different rods to the norm. You will notice alot of rock and surf guys love them. They are in fact in my opinion, not the easiest rods to cast in some aspects. Because of the tip action, start going heavier and you start loosing distance quickly. I have learnt alot about the blank in this past year. Surf casting, the aerodynamics help the rod with loading, recovery, momentum etc.....when throwing lures and plugs, you need to get that rod tip bent properly to cast it properly. I dont know if that makes sense. It has a very slow recovery in my opinion. They have incredible power! They make short work of the bigger fish. I can only give these 3 comments and i hope they make sense.
1. I found that in order to load the rod better and get a better cast, i lengthened my drop, with a shorter drop, it tends to shoot the line.
2. Throwing too light a lure, the tip tends to overpower the cast, and interferes with cast as the tip recovers its action follows through to the line and plug, basically the line and plug bounce with the tip if you know what i mean.
3. What i normally do , not just with this rod , but with my others too, is to find the middle weight, so if a rod is rated 3-5oz, i will only throw 4oz. In this case, i found 3-3.5oz optimum, loads the rod better and best. With the 2.5oz, i make the drop ever so longer and can give more power into the cast.
So although the rod has ratings, you have to develop a feel for your rod, the reel and terminal tackle, and in my case i feel the rod well balanced with my set up. You could throw heavier, but i dont think i will ever need to.
Longer drop
3-3.5oz
Size 16 reel
Best balance for me.
