Morning Kenty.

Aagh it just causes chaos. The stick I got for posting my pics just isn't worth the hassle. Guys get worried about their spots getting over crowded....I have mixed feelings about it...but yeah. It's almost impossible to hide spots these days and as the fishing population grows so does the number of guys fishing them.

I've now resigned myself to the fact that there are many posers on this site and very soon I'll just stop posting as so many others have. What irritates me is especially if the guys who complain seem to think that they know more than the others but you will never see one post of advice or information shared by them which really makes me think that they actually know nothing.

But guess who has the last laugh cause at the end of the day I'm catching these fish and enjoying every minute of it...:)

;)..You can still put the fish up....who knows where you caught them...anyhow....different strokes for different folks....

Love anything to do with chasing these fish - thanks Grootvis for your contributions on what might be construed as a taboo topic!

A long while ago, Haakies posted a "how-to" on plug making. Used this as a base for customising to my needs. 15 x 15 x 130mm, 4.25oz swims and kicks well, tracking a tight line. Rigged either with a self-made assist hook or VMC treble. Totally unecessary, but over time, took things further and added dome resin eyes - also self made.

Cheers, LL

Those are very interesting indeed! They look the business. Im sure they are fish slayers and with that shaped head probably track quite true.

Heres my most successful plugs this season, i had them made up specially to my specs. The blue has particuliarly successful with the white ones. I believe in long skinny plugs.

And as a last note......youll notice something about my plugs which i believe make a big difference...;)

Also i dont throw more than 3.5oz max.just meets my set up perfectly.

Hi Grootvis,

I've been following your thread about your two custom built Exage 110h rods. According to the manufacturer they are rated for 250g / 8-9 ounces. Have you done anything to modify them to cast lighter lures better? Or are they just very optimistic with the quoted 250g? Thanks.

Dave,

You know, they are very different rods to the norm. You will notice alot of rock and surf guys love them. They are in fact in my opinion, not the easiest rods to cast in some aspects. Because of the tip action, start going heavier and you start loosing distance quickly. I have learnt alot about the blank in this past year. Surf casting, the aerodynamics help the rod with loading, recovery, momentum etc.....when throwing lures and plugs, you need to get that rod tip bent properly to cast it properly. I dont know if that makes sense. It has a very slow recovery in my opinion. They have incredible power! They make short work of the bigger fish. I can only give these 3 comments and i hope they make sense.

1. I found that in order to load the rod better and get a better cast, i lengthened my drop, with a shorter drop, it tends to shoot the line.

2. Throwing too light a lure, the tip tends to overpower the cast, and interferes with cast as the tip recovers its action follows through to the line and plug, basically the line and plug bounce with the tip if you know what i mean.

3. What i normally do , not just with this rod , but with my others too, is to find the middle weight, so if a rod is rated 3-5oz, i will only throw 4oz. In this case, i found 3-3.5oz optimum, loads the rod better and best. With the 2.5oz, i make the drop ever so longer and can give more power into the cast.

So although the rod has ratings, you have to develop a feel for your rod, the reel and terminal tackle, and in my case i feel the rod well balanced with my set up. You could throw heavier, but i dont think i will ever need to.

Longer drop
3-3.5oz
Size 16 reel
Best balance for me.

Those are great catches , congratulations !

Dont give up on the braid/multiplier combo until you have tried the adjustable route. Ask Old salt to make you one of these low profile adjusters. spinning multipliers dnt really need a clicker - dedicate one to an adjustable...

Hello Bambooskollie,

On pure personal note, i dont support Old Salt.

Ive been running this through my head alot, trying to find answers, i do not believe the issues im having with the braid is related to the magging system at all.

I believe the line lay is my problem. I know when i have had a bad line lay and almost always know whats coming. An example would be, the other day in a gale east, i must cast a hundred times, without any problem, it actually seemed very comfortable, i tend to get a better line lay in wind, for some unknown reason, and it was casting good distance. The static Mag it worked perfectly. I havent given up yet, but will sort it out. At the moment though, the mono is doing great on the reels! I couldnt be more happier. I just feel the braid is prone to mishaps with just a minor change of something.

What lbs braid are you running at the moment?
If i may ask, do you ever get any braid bite ins, i do tend to for some reason, fishing full braid like this is all new to me, so learning and testing.

Thanks for the indepth reply. Appreciated. Great news as I've just purchased an old model 110h. Still waiting for delivery. Going to pair it with a Cedros 10s. Strange that they rate the rod so heavy if you find 3-3.5 ounces works best. I've found with most of my rods that they are rated slightly heavier than what feels comfortable under load. But nothing like a 6 ounce difference. Maybe when casting a bait your action would be more of a "lob" so the rod can handle heavier?

Its almost like they rate the power according to the ratings, its a strong rod, but in terms of casting...i dont know.....but what i do know is that it is probably one of the best out there as a tail rod, thats for sure, pulling a 15 to 20kg tail , no problem!......;)

_seal1_..I agree...I have a 110H...VERY STRONG ..BUT the tip is just notsensitive enough for casting my spoons from 1oz to 3oz max...Hence I use a 1053H KF Stimulator....still not bthe Holy Grail of rods ..BUT has lotsa back bone and casts lekker too....

Yes. That's why I'm investigating another rod that has a more direct tip for throwing braid and lighter plugs. Still in research stage though.:)
