For the fundis, I am about to invest in a small boat for offshore fishing (one kilometer) what is the fundamental aspects that I have to keep in mind and here I,m specifically talking about safety, is the size of a boat really a factor and if so please explain. Keep in mind that I,m not interested in the quantity of fish caught but that economics (fuell cost) is more of a concern, as well as ease of launching and retrieving the boat and I have just bought a Suzuki sj410 jeep (970cc engine) which I intent to use as the towing vehicle Regards Chock

take a look at the Ark fishduc II, if you shop around you can find a good second hand one. I run mine with a 5hp engine, on a average days fishing i use between 1 and 2 litres of petrol!!

This interests me too.Im looking at a 14" with a skicraft hull and cabin,two motors 30hp.Is this ok for casual fishing just offfshore.?
Hi sardyntjie..Ihave a 14ft ski craft 2x 25 mariners pull start stand up consol like new galv trailer new planks on with teflon new jockey wheel new tow hitch new hand held gps reg for 4 for 15nm full boat and engine cover radio fishfinder and all safety equip up to date.They are light I move mine on the grass push around no problem, you can tow it with a corsa bakkie.I run around langebaan for the day and my 2x 20lt tanks are around half plus.I see you are interested in one with a cabin great when the wind blows but takes up a lot of space.Mine i find great with 2 up 3 you pushing 4 is a no no......give me a shout 0833338318. come have a look if only for ideas iam looking at a 19.6 billfish so mine could be for sale.. only if my deal is ok..

Just curious as to WHY you want to stick to the 1nm limit? A single engine boat, with a vhf radio and some safety kit, allows you to fish up to 5nm from shore.
Having a small boat and only operating 1nm from shore is going to SEVERELY limit your fishing in the Gordons bay area. In summer, the inshore reefs offer good geelbek and cob, but other than that, its pretty dead. You will need to be able to travel a bit further out for decent bottom fish. The Maccassar area is particularly good for bottom fish and you are fishing less than 1.5nm from shore. It is how-ever 7-8nm from the harbour, but you are at all times travelling about 1-2nm from the shore.
Your SJ410 will comfortably tow and retrieve a variety of small boats. The lightest and safest bet would be a small semi-rigid inflatable, something like a 3.8m to 4.3m boat. Powered with a 15-30hp sized engine, it will be VERY economical. SHould you want to venture futher afield, Sir Lowry's Pass is going to be a problem with the SJ410. Rather opt for the more scenic Gordans Bay to Hermanus road. This way, you miss Hou-hoek pass, which has a steep climb on your return journey.
Price ranges from R5000 to R25000 for a decent set-up.
If you still want to only fish 1km from shore, Dorado75 has the perfect vessel for you!!

Kreefkuiken is there and will be used when for example I return from work and want to be in the water in 10min time, keeping in mind that the water should be fairly calm. I have taken kreefkuiken out on fairly choppy water and its not a pleasure. She is perfectly suited for calm water and seabarbal fishing. I intend going for seabarbal big time as I have smoked thousands of them in Swakopmund. I also intend making it known that I will smoke youre seabarbals 50/50. I,m prepared to collect Youre seabarbals in the Strand/Gordansbay area and I,m going to put up sighns in the respected fishing shops.( my smoker is up and running) The new boat is a new project and that is basically it I just love keeping busy and I tend to get carried away once a gogga has bitten me, but hell man if it was,nt for this one caracter flaw I would have been Mr. Perfect

Whatever you buy, make sure the owner takes you for a LONG test. A days fishing. Offer to pay the costs. If you buy, take the trip cost off the price. Fair deal.
Boats aren't suspect after a 15min run around the bay.
But after 4 or 5 hours on the water, if there's a problem, that skipper will soon head home.
If he won't put his life at risk neither should he put yours at risk.
This IS the safest way of making sure you don't get a dud.
Then insist on removing the bungs yourself.

thanks for the good advice, I really appreciate it and as I said before, here is the photos of the boat I intend buying, it comes with a 15 hp evenrude, a prime reason I wanna go for this setup is the Suzuki SJ410 will be able to tow her, even over Sir Lowries pass. I intend making the boat safer by installing plastic bottles in all places possible and then sealing them up, I will carry all safety equipment requiered, The boat is 3,4meters in lenth and I,m sure the 15 hp motor will be more than adequite as I WILL NOT take more than one aditional person on board as there is simplie not enough space. Please feel free to advice on this setup

seen from the back I intend filling all the spaces under the seats with plastic bottles and sealing them up with fishing net, that will not only look authentic but will be light weight. She is big enough for two persons, now heperthetically if all the safety aspects is in place would U venture up to 5 mile out with her? Please feel free to say what You think as I scrutenize each and every comment

I intend towing above with my lastest aquasition, and man am I happy to have her, I,ve been wanting a Suzuki SJ 410 (stock standard) for a very long time but somehow it just never happened until I offered my Yamaha YZF1000 superbike for a straight swop. Within days I had 3 offers Here she is

Guess You are right my man, I,m 56 and the reflexes and mental attitude youn need to handle a superbike today just aint what it used to be 30 years ago and yes even as it is hard to say goodbye I guess its time to call it quits. But I can tell You this Ouboet, some of my best memories and live lessons is associated with bikes
Are you serious...I dont mean to insult you but are your serious about going to sea in the boat in the oicture with a 15 hp Evenrude....man you are one brave guy.
I doubt that that will be allowed here in the Port Elizabeth area...the clubs are strict as are Coastal managment.
