I would like to get some new braid for my galoen setup for the season. At present i have 50lb loaded on my Torium, i think it is Stren, I have to say that i was not happy with it!!

I have seen some guiys using a black/ purple type of braid.... what make is this and whats it like?

Any suggestions would be welcomed!!

Dorado: black-could be Fireline.not sure. Personally I prefer fireline but used PowerPro this Dec and was quiet impressed with it. I take you are casting with it. Power pro is round and sets well on the reel. I am not sure what the breaking strain is but I try is to stay between dia.24 and .28 when it comes to casting.

Yeah, that rings a bell, it must be fireline then that i have seen. I will be casting with it yes. From what i have heard the fireline is quite expensive, i think i heard something of around R1.80 a metre, but i dont think i will need more than 100 to 150 metres for where i fish!
You mentioned the Powerpro, what have you been using this for?

Simen I think you're right, the only black braided line i have seen is Fireline Smoke.

Dorado,
If you're using it to cast with, then it's going to be a very good option.

If it's for backing, then I would go with PowerPro. I have it as backing on my Saltist 50 and I have only heard VERY good reports on it. My braid of choice from now on, not going to waste any more money on Whiplash.

Huh? Why is it a waste, Brendan? R1.50 per meter is good value in my opinion... (for the best braid, that is).

Whiplash is good, but I really don't think it's the best.

A very good choice for backing yes, but so is PowerPro,

based on what I've read on this forum it seems that Whiplash and Powerpro is also the same diameter (based on the amount fitted on reels for backing)

and when it comes to jigging, most of the experienced guys will use Powerpro before Whiplash.

Tony,
The last time I bought Whiplash for my TN40 in December, it cost me R1200 to put on 800m of 50lb, I paid R1.60 p/m.
I can get bulk spools of PowerPro 50lb at about R.80 p/m, half the price - personally I think it's a better product than Whiplash.

30lb Fireline in smoke is what I've used since it first came out for Galjoen fishing. Have had great success with it and I doubt if I'd ever use mono again for that type of fishing. I know you like the reserve Dorado, where you will find the Fireline to be just perfect.

I usually buy a 300yard spool and fill up with that. End of season, I take it off and store it till the next season. It'll last for ages.

sounds exactly like what i need, and you recon the 30lb is sufficient, what about a bit heavier? What reel are you using and what sort of backing are you using, i usually use my Torium 20 or Speedmaster IV on the 110H.

I've only ever used the 30lb so can't really give the pro's on going heavier. What i can say is if you use hook and sinker traces in the same line class with mono, you'll more than likely always get your swivel back when you break off! So ja, personally I reckon it'll be cool.

I use a saltist 30 which is an awesome little reel for this type of fishing and just fill it up! Torium 20 or speedmaster you probably will have to use some backing-.45 or .50mm mono or thereabouts. Just don't know how much.

Mind you, if you wanna spoil yourself-and what self respecting angler does'nt-the Torium or Trini 14(?) would be a fine choice for a dedicated gallie reel. I just kinda liked the Saltist. All three reels are nice and small and lotsa fun!

Stren's Super Braid

Stren's new braid eliminates the problems associated with braided line.

125-stren.jpg

There's no denying that superbraid lines offer greater sensitivity, less stretch and longer life. However, they also come with a variety of problems all their own, like poor overall knot strength, knot slippage, flattening, and loss of color. Stren's new Super Braid retains all the good things associated with superbraids and eliminates the bad.

The company uses an exclusive Advanced Micro Bond Technology (AMT) to impregnate the line with a resin that permeates and bonds to the line fibers. This creates a small-diameter braided line that retains its original round shape, color, slickness and strength much longer. Since it won't flatten, Stren Super Braid is far less prone to digging in on itself, making for longer, smoother casts.

Unlike other braided lines, Super Braid knots perfectly and won't slip.

Stren makes the line in Lo-Vis Green and Hi-Vis Gold in 8-, 10-, 14-, 20-, 30-, 40-, 50-, 65-, 80- and 130-pound tests; spools range from 125 to 1,500 yards.

For more information, contact Stren at 800-243-9700 or visit www.stren.com.

Dorado...is this the stuff you are using? I havent used it, rather I use the fireline, although I heard bad reports abt it too??!! Suppose 'whatever floats your boat' mate!
