Hi u All,

Im new  2 jet ski fishing, but have done some research.Would like 2 know if u guys could help me out with a few answers?????? please 

Looking at spending around 70k for a ski. 

1.I know the 4 stroke is better in many ways but also more expensive. Can u troll with the 2 stroke ass smootly?

2.Can 2 guys fish off one ski?

3.What's the best second hand ski 2 buy????

Bought it from Racetech Yamaha in Pinetown about 10 months ago. She fishes like a dream. Lots of extras. If you are interested I can give you further details and mail photo's.

For around R70k you can get a second hand Yamaha VX110...reliable, 3-seater and is a 4-stroke.

Hi Kanarie

The more important criteria is length. Whatever ski you buy, if you want to go out more than 1 Nm( Cat E) offshore it must be more than 3.1 m in length. The max you can go out with one engine is 5 Nm (Cat D), but then the craft must be longer than 3.1. The diffs between the two Categories is the safety equipment ( 2 flares more)

4 Stroke is the only way to go , because if you have ever sat close to a 2 stroke on a slow troll then you will know what i am talking about.  MAJOR sick !
The 2 stroke will also chow fuel big time.

A good all round choice would be a 4 stroke, about 1100 to 1600 cc ( 100 to 160 Hp), and if you want to ensure economy - no turbo or supercharger.

If you are buying second hand, one of the problems ( and there can be many) is that the previous owner/s never worried about running the unit in shallow water and the clearance between the pump casing and the impeler ( yeah - the engine drive a water pump) can be shot.
Also try and go for a unit where the pump casing ( i think it's also called a wear ring) is not plastic but is stainless.
I know Yammies and Kawas do not have plastic.
If you are buying from a dealer get them to guarantee / warranty the Health of the jet pump.

Can get a abrand new kawasaki STX 15F for 99k u think its worth saving a bit more or do i go for a second hand yammie?

I'm afraid i am a bit biased towards the Kawasaki. The STX has given me good service and my suggestion would be to save a bit more and go for a new one, although how long they will hold  the R 99000 is unknown. Prices move like crazy --- I bought mine new in October and paid R 119000.00 with a trailer.
I have been "PM ing" another Sealiner and he also has been quoted on a new STX, but it appears that the one being offered to him has no reverse-- . Whatever ski you buy, make sure that it has reverse.
One of the problems i have found with Yamaha is the attitude of the dealers.

4 stroke without a question. I dont know the Kawas but as youve heard from Johnno they are more than adequate. Im now on my 3rd Yammie. First one was a 2 stroke and never again!

If you phone around you should be able to get a 2009 Yamaha FX1.8 HO (SHO is the supercharged one) for R130k.

I have read alot of ther responses and am also new to the game.  I have just purchased a Yammaha VX 110 Cruiser.  I have checked the performance reviews and it has proven "according to test reviews on internet" to be outperforming many of it's competitors.  I personnally have no specific preferences, but have been focusing on brands that I know are reliable.  The VX cruiser is quite a superior craft, with a 4-stroke 1050 cc motor and you can now buy a brand new 2008 model cruiser with trailer for R105k.

4 stroke ski,s are the way to go for fishing,low maintanance,economy on fuel is great as well as fuel injection and all the development is on 4 stroke ski,s for the future.I have been racing ski,s all over the world since 1995 and have raced for factory yamaha usa as well as factory kawasaki.I have ridden all the ski,s on the market and bang for your buck  right now the stx naked and stx15f kawasaki is tough to beat.It has a good ride,reliable ,good storage and 160hp .I  dont see the need for reverse while fishing so the pricing of the stx-s works out to a great deal.I own one and fish it every weekend off richardsbay .We also have ultra 260x,s  and that hull is incredible in rough water and storage second to none.

Maybe a little off-topic.....Dustin, I am also in the market for a jet ski, not fishing but just playing, but concerned that there is no support in Durban for the Kawa as the East Coast Kawa recently closed as per the motoring news...also what is the Kawa equivalent to the older Yami FX160. Thx.

No prob.We are the approved dealer for the whole KZN COAST.I have a service mechanic in Durban that does basic maintanance and services.The spares are available from us and we deliver country wide.Kawasaki has gone in a different direction with there jetski sales and has not tried to appoint a dealer on every corner street with no experience.We can give you backup and you will get service.And to answer your other question the ultra lx 160hp is the direct competition to the fx160 but we sold every unit Kawa has and we are waiting for stock.It is not a speed demon like the 260x but it is a great fishing ski with excellent ride,reliability and storage,almost double the storage of the fx

Hi Dustin.Ek het die kawa stx12.Dis n ongelooflikke ski ,Hy het nou 27ure op .Daar is heeltemal genoeg krag vir hengel en baie stabiel.Kan jy my dalk uit wys op die probleme wat die stx12 kan gee.Ek het gehoor daar is n skroefie wat in die enjin losgaan en dan die hele enjin seaze.Kan jy dalk se of dit waar is.Ek dink kawa gaan yamaha opdraande gee een van die dae

Thanks Danie, a few years ago in 2006 there was a bad batch of timing chain bolts in a few ski,s in the USA.4 of these made it to south africa and gave problems but they were grey imported ski,s.The guy that imported them is a well known jetski rider and replaced all 4 ski,s with new ones .If your ski is from that batch it would of broken within 10hrs usage and would of been covered by warranty if brought in by Kawasaki south africa.But this was only in 2006 and that part has been changed years ago and was only in the 15 and 12f.I have never heard of another one ever doing it.There was about 10 world wide .That 15f motor is one of the strongest motors ever produced and is used in many ski,s because of reliability.If you read any international foroums you will see there is not much out there than can outlast a 15f motor.Kawasaki has won 9 of the last 11  pro world championships with the sitdown ski,s .That shows handling ,reliabilty and quality.
