west coast cob

the weekend produced some good catches of cob on the west coast, typical baits used was pilchard and chokka.

preferred feeding times were push tide to high tide.

fish in the 2.0kg to 7.0kg class were landed at the kraal

the fish are still around but they wont be for long. clearly these were the typical silver cob with red tinge in the body and tail which prevails during the summer months... the winter cob are brown and stocky.

other fish such as steenbrass, elf, geelbek and white stumps were also landed.

thanks for this report. Interesting that fish where taken after such flat seas.

I have been wondering whether it was worthwhile taking a paddle up at Melkbos with the dropshot stick. Good news that there are some kob still around, i heard last year the kob stuck around till July up there. I will wait till it flattens out a bit though. Next weeks swell doesnt look like fun.

the flat water had some surf roll in it...

it was a bit rough on saturday afternoon when the northwesterly kicked in.

some fish do tend to stay around the kelp beds at melkbos, warm water and sufficient food.

dropshot works well off the skis at melkbos and the kraal.

Subaruseun,
Am I correct if I assume that the "kraal" is Ganzekraal? Does one pay an entry fee when fishing there?
P.S Nice fish!

100% ganzekraal.

no day campers allowed. it is safe from a security point

to enter you have two options:

daily fishing access is R17
or you can get an annual access permit for R250.

its about 50kms from capetown

take the west coast road (R27) past koeberg then past atlantis turn off, then past silwerstroom turn off, the next left turn just over the hill is ganzekraal.

fish off the island (aka kabeljoubank), but you need a guide to who knows the island to take you as it can become dangerous.

off the rocky banks in front of the lapa and the rocks banks to the left.

mussel has worked for kob but they prefer pilchard.

mussel & redbait for hottie and gallie yes.

it is safe from a security point of view...

keep an an eye on the water, it does have some nasty sets of swell on the NW
