Went to Roodeplaat (hengelaarsvreind) are on the 19, 20 & 21 of November 2010. Peg 30

My approach was to make a feeding spot with cooked maize (which was sent throw a ‘meelertjie) and some whole pips. This was mixed with popcorn feed. It didn’t work as I planed and the fish wasn’t interested in any pips which I offered them. But due to the weight and size of the cooked maize it stayed longer and did help keeping/attracting the fish to my feeding spot.

Day 1 (19/20 -11-2010)

Arrived at the Plaat around 4, unpacked and the lines was in at 17.30. I decider to throw 60-70m with the 1 rod and 20-30 with the other. 8 bolls of plain cooked maize on 60m and 10 bolls of plain cooked maize / maroek at 20m.

At 20m I was targeting blues and small carp.

At 60m I was targeting carp and barbell.

Fishing was slow and only caught my first fish (carp of 880g) at 2:00 am on the 20m spot, meanwhile 6 carp (by 4 anglers) of around 2.5kg was caught on either side of me.

In the morning (6:00 am) I landed a small barbell of 2.6kg on worms on the 60m spot.

Carp, SWD on bottom hook with biddulphs on bol and oorlog 1 on the top hook. Vaaldam strop was used.

The other anglers mentioned rose, but wasn’t willing to elaborate on what dips they were using.

Day 2 (20/21-11-2010)

All I manage for the day was small taps on the rods. The anglers on the NTV grounds manage to land a few fish, at hengelaarsvriend 1 or 2 came out.

I changed (22:30) to the same combo which bought me the carp of 880g the night before and the BOM I was using was carp o-fix (50% popcorn) its very fine and don’t leave a lot of big particles. I made my brake throw 23:45 at night, 1 carp of 420g (20m).

But it was still to slow; I decided to swap the Plan SWD with an OX Blood SWD and 30 minutes later a carp of 440g, 45 min later a carp of 1.44Kg (all on 20m).

The big problem I had with the 20m spot is it holds a lot of small vlei kurpers (due to the bolls of maroek I threw during the day) so there was a lot of small fish eating my bait with a lot of small taps. I had to rebate every 20min, if there were small bites present.

I decided to change the 60m rod to the new combo (06.00 am)

Sliding Rietvlei , Bottom hook  OX blood SWD, Top hook floutie with SWD and on the BOM Oorlog 1 and Biddulphs.

07:20 - 1 carp 1.46Kg

09:00 - 1 carp 1.5Kg

Hardly any fish was caught during the night and day by other anglers. Think around 4 and then there was my 5 for the night and day at hengelaars vriend.

I caught a few vlei kurpers and during the process landed a whopper of a bass. My first a roodeplaat, the bass weighed in at 10g +- 1 gram, Lol

So for the trip:

6 - Carp (Total 6.24Kg)

1- Barbell (Total 2.65Kg)

15 - Vlei kurpers (Average 15g)

1 - Bass (10g +- 1g)

Not the best of catches but better then nothing at all. The weather temp was 28/30 day and 16/18 night, Slight breeze and hardly any clouds.

OX Blood – Supercast

Biddulphs – Supercast

Oorlog 1 – Dipsy

Ground feed – Carp O-Fix

Wil post some pic’s later.

What a great report thank you! Roodeplaat is not the easiest venue to get fish, anything can happen there.

Congrats on the wife's carp!

I hear the Speciman guys get huge carp there, but you have to be patient.

Keep us up to date with your reports ;)

The week leading up to the 19-21 December 2010, produced a lot of rain. I phoned and decided to change my stand to a log cabin (Peg 44), just incase it rained.

Once at roodeplaat (hengelaars vriend), I was glad I changed to a log cabin. According to the lady at reception the banks of the dam got flooded the day before. All tents were now standing 30 – 40m from the water with a muddy mass covering the 30m to the water. Temperature averaging 27 – 30 degrees in the day and 15 – 16 at night.

Arrived at peg 44, the log cabin is 2m from the water and fishing is done adjacent to the log cabin on the right. There were some places in front of the cabin that was covered with mud. The mud was covered with cardboard boxes and didn’t bother us at all. The only problem was the amount of rubbish drifting on the water, logs, reeds, leaves, trees, bottles…. It made fishing hard; u had to wait 1 – 2.5 hours to cast your line. Luckily a strong wind came up Saturday night around 20:00 and took everything down the river.

Fishing day 1 ([/b]19-12-10[/b]):

Decided to fish at 60-70m with one rod and 20m with the other, the 20m is due to the amount of rubbish drifting at 25 – 80m in. At 20m I fed 10 boms (supercast mixed with whole sweet corn) and the other rod 15 boms (chick chick no2 mixed with canary seed cooked for 45 minutes and supercast feed).

The 20m spot was dead the whole weekend and changed it to 60m the Saturday night.
There were a lot of catfish sponing at the side and in the drifting rubbish.

My wife managed a 2.5kg barbel on a flout; worms was used.

On the 60m it was very tricky, only managed 4 good casts for the Friday due to the rubbish on the water. Got my first fish at 18:00 and the second one at 20:00, both carp weighed in at 1.45kg.

Bait: Floutie with caramel floro baking, both hooks.
Bom: Chick chick no2 mixed with canary seed and supercast feed.
Bom Dips: Joker (strawberry molasses), Oorlog 1 and Devilsfork (just a drop).

Fishing day 2 - 3 ([/b]20-12-10[/b]):

Form 20:00 to 06:00 in the morning no fishing was possible.
From 06:00 – 16:00 line could only stay in for 20 – 30 minutes before the line was picked up by rubbish.

Managed a 3.4kg and 3.2kg barbel during the day, bait was worms and a small fish (galamintjie).

The rest of the day we stayed busy with some canary kurpers along the side of the bank, also coughed a 50g bass during the poses.

The wind started to pick up and thunder was present in the horizon.
Only managed to start fishing at 22:00, this time I put out both rods at 60-70m.
I hade to get rid of the seed mix as it was starting to get sour.

1[suP]st[/suP] rod:
Bait: flouties with SWD baking.
Bom: Supercast Plain feed mixed with popcorn feed.
Bom dips: Joker, oorlog 1 and almond s

2[suP]nd[/suP] rod:
Bait: floutie and SWD baking and 1 hook dipped in Tjop Tjop.
Bom: Supercast Plain feed mixed with popcorn feed.
Bom dips: Joker, oorlog 1 and almond s

At 02:00 got 1 carp of 1.5Kg, while I was busy my other line started to run very slowly. I thought the fish went over the line. When I netted the fish it started to run again. Picked up the rod and the fish was on. To my surprise the reel just started to run and it took 50m of in 30s. I had to time it just right to unclip the line. The fish started to run dam in and when I started to get him close he ran down stream, always keeping 80m from the bank. During the process he picked up my neighbors line which we untangled, the fish was already fighting for 30min. When it head down stream again it picked up the line of the people on the other side, I could feel the fish tangling my line in there’s, then the line was gone and the fish head dam in again. After 60min the fish head down stream again always retrieving 30m and then taking it again. This time it picked up the other line of the people on the other side and that is where it stayed. Fish broke trace and my line stuck on the peoples barber line I think. Not a good way to start the day.

Both rods in again and during 04:00 and 08:00 got 5 fish and 3 got of during netting.
Average between 1 and 1.5kg all carp. All caught on dips mentioned at the top (1[suP]ST[/suP] and 2[suP]ND[/suP] rod).

Total catch for the trip:

Carp = 8 and 3 lost while netting, Avg: 1-1.5Kg
Baber = 3, Avg: 2.5-3.4Kg
Canary Kurper = 10, Avg: 25g
Vlei Kurper = 1, Avg: 30g
Bass = 1, Avg: 50g

I changed my sliding ritvlei, hoek line is now 15 – 20 cm and hooks used were 0.8’ dihatchi. I changed it because I felt that there might be a lot of mud due to the amount of heavy rain.

It was a fun and enjoyable weekend even if it was a bit irritating when the rubbish keep on drifting over your line. If you wand to catch fish at roodeplaat, use the dips and mix mentioned above. I guarantee u wil catch fish.  :fishn

Wil post some photos later.
