LAds you have to try get you some beeg circle hooks - man they work a charm and you also don't have to strike too hard.............

All you do when the fish takes off is let him run a bit take up the slack and tighten the brakes a little the hook pretty much does the rest. What is really nice is that every time you get the barbel to the bank he will be nicely hooked in the side of the mouth - saves you having to put your hand down the sandpaper chops of a monster - saves skin too.

I had my resevations about first using them but now it is all I use  - I have yet to loose a barbel on one.

We'll have our barbel forum yet.....................

Ryan, what size circle hooks do you use?

I think this thread is a great idea!

I have fished for catfish since I can remember and it is the biggest freshwater species I have caught thus far. I normally use a medium-heavy rod, 9kg mainline, 20kg line on my rigs and recently I have started using circle hooks as well, my hook-up rates increased a lot when I started using them. My usually use fish heads as hook-bait. Using a circle hook is also better for the fish because they can not swallow the bait and its easier to unhook them.

A lot of the time I mince some meaty stuff I get at the butcher, put it in an orange bag and drop it in the water to attract them! With this technique me and 2 of my friends have caught 25 catfish ranging from 9-15kg.(I have attached one of the fish my friend caught, it was caught in a farm dam near Kroonstad)

These days I prefer catching catfish with my 6-7weight fly-rod. I use a technique where I tap the fly on the water near areas where I think they will be. My biggest so far was a 10kg fish! What a great fight on a fly-rod!

The nice think about this fish is when the other fish will not bite no matter what you try, they normally will not let you down!

Great Idea for a thread!!!!!

I used to do a lot of catfish fishing, and I must say, hooking the bigger ones is a art in own right........ landing them is something else!!!

I grew up next to the Vaal River, and barbel became my favourite freshwater "gamefish". Unfortunately, I have yet been unable to land the real monsters, although I hooked into them on more than one occasion. My PB is just 15kg, which is not that big.

A great bait is to defrost chicken livers and spread them between layers of garlic salt. The salt toughens up the livers, and garlic is a natural feeding stimulant. The combination works rather well!!! You can also stuff some of chicken livers in the mouth of the carp head before hooking it, which will enhance the bait a bit. It is a pitty that live bait is illegal in fresh water....it really works wonders!!!!!

AWWWW come on GTZA who's the top SA team currently?

Critter - I only use artificials and they are by far the biggest thrill on light freshwater tackle

I can just imagine Ryan!!!!

I have only recently started lure fishing as well, and I am hooked pretty solid ;-). I have however been using light tackle bass rods and koffee grinders for most of my fishing on the Vaal as they fit well into a canoe, and the fight is so much better! My dad has got a place on the Loch, and I am verry keen to go and try for barbel on loodkoppe next time I'm up there.

For now, I am just enjoying the great new world of lures that is opening up.......I am even selling some of my baitfishing stuff to finance by new addiction!!!!

good to see a barbel forum. I must admit, i don't like the fresh water variety. I just catch them in da surf. And lots of them all da time. seems like a mystery to me! barbel, sand shark, barbel, sand shark, o yes, and maybe an edible somewhere inbetween!

We went to Harties a while back to target Barbel on fly.  We didn't catch big ones, but it was alot of fun!!  I am going to try the technique the artlure guys use to "call" barbel this weekend.  Only difference is I will try it on my flyrod.
