its not such a great art catchin barbel lets be honest!
anythin smelly:)
1)small birds with their feathers plucked
2)frogs
3)fish heads
4)ox or chicken livers

double hook trace, sliding sinker if bait is light bait otherwise just lob the bait in there and make sure it sinks (puncture the bait a few times to get the air out esp if its a bird)
there you go...thats basically all anyone needs to know about catching barbel

oh best spots...
under weaver nests or where birds roost
near reeds...cos thats where they LOVE to run once you've got em hooked up and from there they will knit your line casually through the reeds!

BjornH -fraid I tend to agree with Lenny.

I target barbel and yes they will eat just about anything.

I target them with artlure though not with smelly stuff.......

Name one fish in freshwater South African fish that;

1. Matches the size of our barbel?

2. Fights as Dirty as they do?

Has brute strength and tenacity any I find are and absolute Joy to catch.

I hasten to add that I will choose Barbel over Trout or Bass anyday of the week given half a chance.

Lenny for once I tend to agree with you.........

Let us get a barbel Forum section going and for those that turn their noses up at our slimy mermaids - well guess you don't need to read the barbel forum then.

My 2c worth............

on artlure its always a different story cos then it becomes alot more about skill rather than having a smelly bait in the water.
as to preferrin it over bass, id be biased to say it's more fun catchin bass. It must have something to do with the aerial bombardment and the fact they grap a topwater and then you get that rush.
must say wen a barbel has accidently grabbed my bass lures i've had great fun...once i even screamed "im gonna get stripped!!!!!!"...i swear i thought i was cos the boytjie just didnt stop for anything...until it did and i landed it...weighed 7 kgs.
different strokes i suppose. Don't mind mr whiskers nailin my bass lures from time to time, but bass fishin will always be where im at.
tight lines guys

Bjornh Respect to you mate for your response.

As for barbel slamming surface lures Aerilly - man go to Bloemhof they virtually hit the lure on the way down - scary stuff when you see these 10kg + munsta's come and boil on a surface lure.......

Stick to my guns - barbel over bass anyday on lure......

ciao'

ok let me say that fishing is fishing, even if you go to the basic method of catching them with a scoop net-and dont say you've never done that when they spawing on the banks cos its so much fun.who agrees? anyway, fishing is fishing and we should all try all kinds of fishing to actually comment about it,and find the type most suitable to you!personally iv targetted most species, now that im away from the sea i have so much fun catching barbel, bass carp and especially trout!so i take back my words from when i said a couple months that sea fishing beats fresh water.i have to say i cant choose cos as long as you having fun, relaxing and out in nature its all good.but i can see something starting here, guys gonna start saying its a SEAline forum, and only for sea anglers.so its debatable but i say fresh water and salt water fishing rocks.as long as the reels scream and the lines keep getting streched im happy

Leonard, thats is easily the BEST post you have ever made on sealine. It's well thought out and well written.:clap12 That I totally agree with what you say is also obviously a bonus.

Well said!

Hi LL
Have to agree with you...one of the best Leonard...agree with ...any type of fishing is fun as long as it is FAIR to the fish and the enviroment.

errrm i beg to differ, they are one of our hardest fighting fresh water fish, catching barbel may be easy, try and catch a big one over 15kg, thats an art.  Barbel like other fish the bigger they get the wiser they get.

2 years ago I saw someone land a +/-30 kg sharpie - bait used live muddie (1kg) ---> De Hoek Bloemhof.

When Carp Specimen angling - they tend to screw up your lines (if picked up) - after you placed you bait 1 - 2 day ago - targeting the 15kg carp (which I stil have to catch). But having them on still contributes to the fun.

My first fish this year was a 5.1kg on 3wt with 2.9kg tipit in the rapids of the Vaal. The Vaal Tango was the order of the day - smokes wet, clothes wet, and I looked like a drenched rat ! But man it was worth it.

Great fun catching those buggers .... MY PB sitting at 15 kg's. I always use my surf tackle when hunting these monsters.
Gives me casting practice as well.

Hi Sidd, what setup do u use, i also do the same, i use my light surf tackle to target barbel,  Once at the vaal i casted out a 200g live carp and got picked up :), but i was eventually smashed, got to say i like fishing for barbel hey

200ts ... I use my 13' graphite rod with my Diawa sl50 loaded with 25lb line. I use a running sinker trace and often cast out a carp head. My trace is made up of a 1m 60lbs bite trace with 2x 3/0 hooks. I give the fish a chance to run with the bait before striking. This allows it to swallow the bait. The last time I went ( about 3 weeks ago ) I caught 6 in the 10kg class. Not bad for a days outing.
