My Motoguide Steering cable broke In March this Year.

I phoned the agents in SA for a replacement cable.

  • They Had no stock [/*]
  • Quoted Price R1650 (Cable alone)[/*]
SO I went online.......

I purchsed the Following.

1x 69' Steering cable

1x Speed control Dial

1x Rack guide

I had to wait 6 weeks for delivery (Thanks to US Postal Service - service being so crap)

Total cost for all the above including postage R565-00

Ryan, this is happening all over. SA okes are way to greedy and want to become rich overnight. What about aftersales service??There is non in SA!!

I mean have a look at the boat prices? How much aren't they making on a engine? Some boats are even more expensive then m3's and townhouses...lol

That is no bull... I was looking at buying a tackle shop (Well Known) and in the process of auditing their books I realised how we were being ripped of in this country. A rod that they landed for R400 was sold for R1200, plastics they were making 80% margin and yet they were one of the cheapest shops!:fbash

I still say one of the main reasons we are getting ripped off here as that we are not really up to speed with world technology.
I say this because anywhere in the states you can go online, shop and have the article delivered to you witin 24 hrs.
Here they bargain on you being area bound and that they only have to be the cheapest in your area. Online shops are not as many as overseas. So the competition is more area bound than country wide.

Take the diff in tackle prices ( province compared ) and add the postage. then you might as well buy the more expensive product closer to home.

Ryan.
Where did you buy that spares from. I am still waiting for Rapala VMC to send me a quote for the bell-end housing for my Minn Kota.

Cables can be rebuilt. For what you paid I'll rebuild it for you good as new for nowhere near that price.

I used
http://www.boats.net

It pays to shop around. Some sites offer better schematics of the trolling motors - best if you can get the part numbers.
Remember if you want the parts quickly request they FEDEX them to you otherwise they will send it USPS (6 weeks for mine to come). Price is 10us$ vs US $35.
All my parts are genuine items.

Tauruck thanks - I will that take you up on that offer as now I want a spare cable - I have a pirate that I had made up that broke in the first 10 mins so you can use that as a sample - parts need to be stainless.

Zaks in vanderbijlpark sells Zoom Plastics for about R80/90 a packet, Hengelaars paradys in Vanderbijlpark sells Zoom Plastics for about R35/55....this is ridiculous...

Ive given in my Rapala digital scale at Zaks in February and he told me that he will send it in for repairs or for refund...Ive been phoning him constantly and he says that Rapala's got it, i phoned Rapala and they dont even know about my scale....So where the heck is it??

I think we need to find local suppliers that will make the standard 35% markup on their goods (I mean they have to survive too) and "boycott" the sharks in the game..

its not that easy, the big distributors make it very difficult for the small guys to make purchases, HUGE opening orders, and HUGE minimum orders and then you still battle to compete with discounts that the big dealers get!!! it really make the idea of parallel importing sound so much better, it would be great to get a business model like HI-FI corp and bring in grey goods and stick it to them that way!! "Angling corruption".

It might be worth giving my importer a call. He has a weekly shipment from the States. It's mostly V8 related but he's brought in Bass stuff before. As long as you have details on the supplier and the exact item you want he'll get it for you. I have a Bass Pro Shops catalogue that he gave me and everything has a part number so it's easy.

Morning,

I have picked up that your a V8 guru? I am busy with my 60 series cruiser and when I bought it it had a horrific conversion done to it, with a 350 chev motor, great motor , bad conversion!

I am in the process of getting all re-built and am almost there, the old conversion had two big side by side electric fans with a switch in the cab as well as a conventional belt fan, do I need the electric fan?

cheers

Greg
