WOW WOW WOW - when JD recommended I read this thread, this was the last thing I expected! Thank you, BoomBoom, for sharing your Grandfather's story. It is fantastic seeing these amazing photographs and shows that in those days, you made do with what you had. We are very spoilt for choice today where gear and tackle is concerned. I may be an oldie, and the only angler and female angler in my family, but I love the sport and, with any luck, I will continue to do it until the day I leave this earth. I just haven't targeted shark or other in-eds, yet!

Manna to you.

Fantastic stuff, I loved this post.

I need a bit of a geography lesson. Since I live in New York and have never been to South Africa, I have been a bit confused as to exactly where Pots and Pans Le Roux fished.
When I check the satellite map of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, I see a sea wall extending out into the Indian Ocean for what seems like a mile or so. The wall looks to made of preformed concrete crosses with a road way at the top, this wall I am assuming creates the commercial harbor.
Then, looking at the vintage black and white photos of Mr. Le Roux, I see him fishing on a different type of sea wall. I see wooden platforms and shelters and what looks like a sea wall built of natural rocks and boulders.
Also, there has been a difference when referring to the sea walls by name. Is the sea wall at St Francis Point the same sea wall location at Port Elizabeth harbor?
Reading this post is suggesting to me that these locations may be the best land based big game fishing on the planet as well as some of the toughest and most determined fishermen that I have ever read about.

I take my hat off to Pots and Pans Le Roux, he must have been a very special man.
