geez, now that makes me nostalgic for the good old days in durban. around 18 or 20 years ago we used to fish in front of the container depot just before the coaling wharf at night and have awesome fun catching walawala on 3kg line with small little kp reels. my mate's dad used to claim them to troll for couda...aaaaah the good old days.

A lil too late but for future ref, a 7cm spoon and a pearl white shrimp imitation (drop shot) works wonders.... all fishing on the surface of course. Had major fun at the Yacht club in Rbay.

N yep, pure bliss for cuda!!! :dude:

Walla-walla - Trichiurus lepturus - Ribbonfish or Cutlass fish
Found throghout SA waters
Stomach can distend greatly when feeding.
Has teeth like a Barracuda!
SA Record 2.4kg
Very bony fish, but if you know how to clean it properly is apparently outstanding eating.

Fights like a gamefish when hooked.

Thanks for the info Reefman. Interesting to see what the S.A. record is.

The walla walla is very active  at night. They can be caught using a small float, allow the line to be about 500mm below the float and tie the light stick about 100mm above the hook and bait the hook with sardine a No 2 kendal round works well or any other long shank hook . We caught up to eight some nights using this method.(watch those teeth).

Amazing the Rock/surf angling record is 2.4kg. Get this ....the SADSAA All-tackle angling record is 3.2kg....!!! On light tackle, this must be a rush of note!

These fish are so plentyful in the durban harbour, we catch up to 80 - 100 some evenings, you can some sometimes triple up on them, 3 hooks on 1 line ... then the fun begins !!!!
