Using a KP as a vertical jigging reel

Well can you use a KP as a vert jigging reel? Our 9.5" KP's can reel in about 56" of line, so its fast enough...

I saw the guys on the hook line and jeep show using a KP, and it worked....But is it a good idea? Even when wearing a leather glove?

My dad looks quite interested in vert jigging, but we cant afford saltigas and stellas, and the KP is the only other reel that I can think of that is strong enough to handle jigging. I have an Okuma salina that I was told can handle vert jigging, but I dont want to punish my precious reel like that

We (Natal ski boaters) have been vertical jigging for years (whipping) I have caught quite a few shoal couta on 5 - 7" KP's - the best way by far to catch couta is with a KP !

can be done, buut not the best option (IMO). As for the expensive saltigas, stellas etc, also dont have to use these. I use a torium (R1200 0dd) and it works perfectly. I would love a stella but the $ would hurt so I use what i can afford (for now). A large Kp woyuld be very unbalanced on a short light jigging stick.

Have to agree with you bro, you will seriously kak off trying to maintain the speed and rythm required - you will only get it with a long floppy whip stick and smaller than 9" KP which are slow - and even then a big fish could seriously kick your ass - I have had mine kicked a few times spooning for shoal couta in Mozambique by big GT's. 

It can be done but modern purpose built geared reels are the way to go - that said a KP is still the best (sometimes painful) way to catch a gamefish - so direct, as if the fish is connected directly to your brain.

Intrestingly, the striped marlin 30lb record was caught with a KP - 90 kgs -  6" KP !!

Whipping a Cuda spoon is something the lads have been doing for years.

I caught a nice 30kg tuna whipping a spoon off stud rock west brook side many moons ago. I have a scar on my left wrist from the burn that KP inflicted.

The reel can handle it. The question is...

haha, ya me and my dad have nearly broken our hands when a bus decides to take our bait when we bottom fishing. But a KP is still the most durable reel around. The punishment me and my dad put these reels through will surely destroy an ordinary reel. We have never serviced our KP's mainly because we always thought you didnt need to. Just a spray of Q20 in the spindle once a year and off we go! Try doing that to a saltist or any other reel for that matter....they wont even last a year. But a KP deffinetly has its limitations

surfaMike - what size is the Salina ? - put some heavyish braid on it and use it bro !
You can put 50lb braid on a SA55 no problem.

I love KP's, must be my Natalian heritage. Something to try is remove the one handle. It gives you more time to get your knuckles out the way when the fish strips off.

Its a 65, and is loaded with 25lb KFGA clear line because I cant afford braid and also dont like braid, but ya thanks for the advice. Maybe when I have 500 bucks I can buy braid....

Hahaha BigMatt bru I'm not only using it for shad, I wanna use it for those big buses that hang around in the blind canal, you know how big those honeycombs get! They scare the crap outa me! Wouldnt mind hooking into one of those with my salina....Now THAT will be a jol!!

I have 30lb KF casting braid on my 55 and it isen't too bad - no bunches/fups etc yet - I have caught a few 'testing' fish on it but summer is here and it should be tested on a bull dolly or two come March !!
