Caught on pilchard and white mussel combo. We think it's a "pilot" fish. AQD can you help out please? Will post some better photos. Thanks.

Hiya Oosie,

Thats a small Remora.

Normally find then sucked onto other fish where they feed off the scraps as thier host feeds.

Often find them on sharks.

yup it's a Shark Remora. a 'Remora' is plain grey in colour. You had the right idea with pilot fish as they are also black and white and travel with large host (sharks, manta rays etc)

We caught quite a few of these in the middle of the ocean between Madagascar and Zanzibar on bait, a couple were nice and big and put up quite a fight, will see if i can find some pics.

Dorado 75: This was a first timer for us at Porto Amboim from the surf, but like you said, quite strong for such a small fish. Off the topic now; Do you guys catch any sharks in the Angolan waters and what tipes? Not talking about flatfish.

AQD: The reason why I asked about sharks in Angolan waters: We have been fishing here at PA for 2 years now(mostly only Sun afternoons) and we have not landed a single shark here. Sandsharks and skates yes, no sharks. Seems strange to me, although we did not target them, we had some nice big baits(sardine & heads) in the water. A hungry shark wont pass that? Also the locals use a lot of netting here, but we have not even seen a small Bronzie, etc.

We have been fishing at night as well, nada. The only reason why they are not taking bait that I can think off is that there are plenty baitfish around and not interested in our baited hooks, too clever for us.
