Unreleased edibles not counting for YG/OB competition

There is nothing better than to prepare and eat your own fresh fish caught by yourself. Some of us actually prefer fish above red meat. A lot of effort/time/money goes into fishing and to catch an edible once in a while is very rewarding. The majority of us practice catch and release, but also keep a suitable one for the pan when there is a need for FRESH fish and not fish that were lying in plastic crates for hours at fish wholesalers.

Does not mean that we will keep all edibles during the YG/OB competion, but if you want to keep one for the pan why can it not count for the competition? Rather work on a bonus point system for catch and release. Also, how will you be 100% certain that a fish was released after the photo was taken? Grey area, I think so?

I was thinking the same thing Oosie- the release thing, not the eating one. How will we prove that we released it? I am honest and I am sure that everyone here is too,but you never know.

The guys must remember it is not worth cheating, cause it will come back and bite you in the ass, this is a friendly comp in the sealine family and a load of fun, being dishonest does not even come into the picture. Enjoy the comp and enjoy eating your fish, simple. Have fun

Good question

Look at it this way.

Guys staying at the sea could be there more often than the inland guys.

The inland guy tries to get a much out of the weekend that he is there and lets say he catches only one nice edible, now the choice--Does he release it and get a couple of points, OR does he take it for the braai , I mean this could be his only edible for the year.

The guy at the coast can decide that the one of today is for the braai and the one of tomorrow is for the points.

Not trying to change the rules, but lets think about it.

WHAT ALSO COULD HAPPEN

Is that an angler could catch a fish, take a pic, claims he released it and then takes it home. ( talking edibles here )

Food for thought--Aqua D and JJ you guys started the comp, its in your hands to decide.

Competitive events always draw greater attention and coverage. This is the ideal time to promote SEALINE's conservation ethic...

"Fish for the future, Catch and release today".

All SEALINE competitive events are therefore strictly Catch and Release.
(No exceptions).

We all need to understand that Sealine is being watched by many people, potential sponsors, lawmakers, regulators and stakeholders - at 14 million hits a month - Sealine is the unofficial voice of the SA fisherman... and as such, we need to put our best face forward...

Osie, your circumstances are extraordinary, and we feel for your predicament; however it is unfortunate that your catch can't count, we hope you understand.

If any one get's caught cheeting, the respect that that person has built up through his time here will be lost.. I for one will neva chat to that person again "igonre button"... And as for keeping one for the braai well that's up to u, but it will not count for point's.. All is not lost that's why we have the "off the hook member gallery" post the pic there than u can get credited with complement's.... Cheer's JJ

I personally believe that the catch and release is a big part of this comp....I will not be submitting all my catches as I will be keeping some for the braai but it will definitely get me to release the big edible, I think it is a great initiative and big ups....After all me as a young gun wants to be able to take my laaitie fishing and get him hooked on that monster kob or steamtrain..As far as the dishonesty goes, u are cheating no-one but urself.....my 2c

Rules are rules, and it states clearly that the fish must be released before it counts and it's also in the sealine etiquette that we should respect it at all times. Remember, it's your decision if you want to participate or not...but please stick to the rules.

Just a thought !!!

2 problems here Kumz

1) a guy thet fishes alone wont handle the camera and be able to release at the same time

2) we limited the comp to 2 pics a day to keep posts "controlled" on this tread. 4 pics a day, just to much, think about the amount of pics to be uploaded in Jan if all competators start uploading.

Lets keep it as it is----REMEMBER the only guy you are feeding horse manure to is YOURSELF  if you cheat.

I agree 1002%  - at the end of the day, it is you and only you that can decide whether you want to participate or not, exactly the reason why I choose not to participate, if I catch my quota of fish, it is going home with me.

Not to say that I keep them all to myself, when was the last time you saw a 97year old "toppie" that can hardly walk with Parkinsons so bad he can hardly hold a coffee mug, never mind a rod, eyes light up when you give him a small cob, immediatly you can see him thinking back to years gone by when he could still fight the big ones.

This gives me much more pleasure than to participate in a competion against people that I do not know from a bar of soap - Also my choice

The idea is to encourage catch and release, NOT FORCE IT. Which I Believe is what Sealine is about.

If you want to keep your fish, well it's your right to do so, the only difference is it won't count. This is not the end of the world if it doesn't count, remember it's still a SOCIAL event.

If you keep it, then post a short report of your fishing day, with a pic of your fish, and tell us how nice it tasted, and we will all envy you ...

Comments noted, just trying to make it easier for the Old ballies to get points on the scoreboard. So come on all old ballies, back to the drawing board. We all have to go to the gym for a week, build up that old muscles again and then we target all the big sharks like the fit young guns. I can see a lot of aching bodies for the next 5 months(2 hour fight with a bronzie, blood, sweat and tears)

in my thread of the grunter i caught i managed to hold my rod in one hand and take photos of playing the fish with another. lol.

a pic of you releasing a fish will be a gr8 idea but will be difficult when fishing alone.

PS Oosie... it was a spectacular catch bud... well done!

PPS: "There's no such thing as an honest fisherman"..??.....
EXCEPT a SEALINE FISHERMAN - we expect them to be all honest!!

Any dishonesty will result in a LIFETIME BAN.
After all guys, this is supposed to be fun!

Remember, what goes around comes around....

My opinion on this is simple. If you catch a nice edible you have two choices:

1. Release it and you get 5 points per kilo and the great feeling of releasing a fish.

OR

2. Keep it and you get no points for the fish and enjoy the great taste of that fresh fish in the pan or on the braai.

Its really quite simple and in my view number 1 is far more attractive than number 2.

That Kingie went to the local medic this morning, she stitched it together, gave it a Penicilin, Brufen, Voltaren injection, two grandpa's, one Berocca, revived in the local lagoon and of he went. Released. Can I have my points now?
Witness: Mr. Nobody.
Have a nice day!
