Tying Kit??

Ive recently gotten bitten by the Fly bug..

And now seems that i cant get enuf, ive been Fishing from a young age, but only recently been exposed to Fly.

I would like to start tying my own flys as a hobi, and passtime.

But Unfortunitly i can't  find a " Starter pack" any where.

Like a begginers kit of sum sort.With everything that you would need to get started in it.

Ive been to all the Angeling shops in the Pretoria area, but no luck, please advise if anyone knows of sumwhere in the Pretoria area.

And i dont want my pants pulled down over the price either , so more or less a normal going prices aswell.

Starter packs are normally junk anyways -they seldom have all the stuff that is required to tie decent flies anyways.

What I can highly reccomend is that you try and get hold of Murry Peddar - he used to have a flyshop in JHB at a stage - this guy is a true master of flytying - he often shows new guys the ropes and learning him you will gain invaluable tips tricks and knowledge.

Buy a quality vice and tools it makes all the difference that I can assure you - I learnt with out anyones assitance and bru it can be very dishartening in the beginning - I have met many guys who have shown me the odd trick or too and so my fly tying abilities have progressed with time - I am finally at the stage where I can look or buy a sample fly and know what materials are required and the tricks to tying it - tricky things are dubbing/hackles etc.

What species do you intend tieing flies for?

So i should just get myself the vice and tools, and all the material sepratly, and start from there?
Any places you know that stock?

Well so far ive been fishing the vaal almost every weekend, targeting Yellows, getting afew, but endding up with alot of muddies, and Barbel.

But am very interested in Salt flys aswell, as im a avid surf angler, and would like to try sumthing new.
Just think you going to get so much more satisfaction if you pull sumthing out and know that you made the fly yourself!!

Get hold of andrew or piers at laxtons, they assisted me in getting up and tying with good advice and lots of patience, their no is 011 26eight 5eight5zero, they stock all the essentials aswell

Bigger flies are easier to tie - it's got to the point where I don't even bother tieing stiff smaller than 16's - the time and effort it is just easier to purchase these guys.
Baitfish patterns charlies - etc now those are kewl patterns to tie get somebody toi just show you one.
Laxtons is also good.

I would buy seperately but this is me as I have a preference for ceramic bobbin holders and they normally don't come with a starter kit. As in with all things in life keep it simple buy the basics you need and leave all the extra gimmicks out of the equation.....

my 2c. invest in a good vice, ceramic bobbin, best pair of scissors and quality hooks. buy as you need and roam the habby stores with the wife for alternative tying materials. i have bought a lot of books and dvd's on tying which helped a lot but are not essential, there are also numerous sites on the net with step by step info. pm me should you require any more help or info.... welcome to the addiction!!!
