Trailer redo

Hi all

I have a trailer that I need to redo and I have the following questions:

1. Should i galvanize it? If so where is the cheapest around JHB?

2. Can I just give it a good painting....obviously sanding and treating all the rust spots etc. What paint will be the best to use.....I know Hammerrite is good...but expensive.

It will be used in fresh water and salt water (once a year).

Morne --The best but also the most expensive is to galvanize it. Paint regardless the make for this application will only last if the steel is sanded down 100%.
Galvanizing could not be done at all galvanizers as you will have to find one with a bath big enough to dip the trailer or in some cases double dip ( first half then second ) or even 4 dips ( in quaters ).
You can contact ABB in Nigel ( 011 739 8221 ) they have industrial size baths.
But try and see things this way -- you galvanize once-- you paint-- you touch up and repair always.

Some of the modern cold zinc paints are pretty good (galvanising is still b etter though). You will still need to sand blast the trailer to get all the old paint and rust off before applying it, but it work fairly well

Galvanize, pay once and it lasts. As my boat is only used int he sea and we dont have enough water to wash trailer after every use, we galvanised and then painted with epoxy tar. one extra layer of protection. you think only using it in the sea once a year wont be too bad, wrong. the sea eats steel. do it right the first time. you will end up doing it again if you dont and if you keep the baot for any length of time.

Galvanize it if you can, but you get an excellent cold galv product called Zinga (google it) but it is useless if the steel is not prepped by sand/shot blasting.
It is used in redoing bridge railings etc. quite extensively in Europe and is (in certain applications)as good as galvanising but is quite expensive.

4 cents per kilo....Sand Blasting

8 Cents per kilo to galvanise..

R 2500 sandblasting

R 2500 Galvanizing

I agree...it should be more is it not? If NOT....PLEASE send me the guys details...and I am there tomorrow!!!
