Comparing a Torium 30 to Penn49 is like comparing your mother to your girlfriend, they are both girls, but, not the same! If you know what I mean!! Penn49 is old technology vs Torium30 new Technology. One example would be the dragwashers: Penn 49 is about as big as a 2 rand coin. Torium30 is about 40mm in diameter. I would NOT want to hook a big fish on a Penn49!!!!!!!!!!!!

My opinion anyway

think about how many big fish were caught on penn 49s back in the day though

Penn 49 is like the 303, 1000's of buffalo were shot with them in the old days, 1 Roman priest shot over a 1000 himself, why need a 375 or bigger?
BUT they fail to tell you how many animals were lost as well.
Sure the Penn 49 caught many a big fish in the past, but the old timers will not tell you about all the fish that smoked them or how long the fights took.
Like Brian said, compare the drags, compare casting with the 2 and you will rest your 49 for a long time.
I still have 4 49's, we use them for backup reels for bottom fishing.

So true. Wil u say that the torium 30 is a modern penn49 ? I wana feel like Clarkson going "Yeah POWER!" when im using it or else it would not be worth the money for me because im still a student and as you know that moola is scarce for us students!::S

Torium is a machine reel! Most of the guys who run guiding services use them and that should tell you something

As every body has said the49 is old technology but will stil do the job, they have the habbit of popping spools if you have the bakalite spool, my opinion is if you like it use it.

Throw with a friends torium and reel in and see if it is up to your expectations. The reel feels like it has alot of torque. drag will give u around 6 -7kgs on the torium. In my books, you dont need more than that. If money is scarce, carry on with the penn.

My Torium off the rack gives me a 10kg/22lb drag. Great reel but I do love Penn 49A. It now is my backup reel. I have not measured it but I am sure I can cast further with the P49 albeit with more(much more) overwinds. The Torium nearly no overwinds and if they do occur much smaller and easier to untangle. The Torium has a much faster retrieve. Overall I must admit that the newer technology is much much better.

Fishing for Ed's no problem keeping with the 59 but spares availability?

49A was my favourite but targeting in-eds with it is going to result in long hard fights and popped spools.

I've replaced my 49A with a Torium 50 and the 49 with a Tor 30.

The 1st ever BMW 3 Series was a great car but then why do we want to buy a new 320d "Diesel of all things" - back in the day it was only good as a tractor

Same with the reels and the materials they are manufactured from:

More durable
Better Drag
Higher performance for input
Just looks better.

If you're going to keep the 49 the match it with an old school floppy Glass rod.

You can catch good fish with a penn 49, but the reason why manufactures improve on their products is to make it easier for you to catch fish. Technology improves for the benefit of the angler

My opinion is that the two reels is not comparable. I've started fisghing with my beloved Jigmaster (Penn 500), have the Penn 49 and 49A and will never be able to go back to them. Once you are used to new technology there is no turning back. Something like 5 bearings versus two bushes or something like that. Tried casting my 49A the other day, ended up with overwinds galore!!! I'm happy with Torium to do a days hard work, every day!

Look, it depends what you want to use it for. If you want to fish rock and surf and cast spoons for tail off the boat,.....go for the Tori. However , keep the reel clean and dry .......don't let it get to wet......specially not submerged. Used the tori fot fishing tail + tuna......works well, but high maintainance. If its dirty is a bitch to cast and drag gives probs. If you want to do bottomfish of the boat and every now and then go catch a gallie off the rocks........the 49 is the answer, Its bullutproof , works even if its submerced in sandy water............the tipe of reel you fish and hangup when you get home. Parts a lot cheaper than the tori. Ideal to fish heavier line.....0.55 and up, but not a good caster.
