Good day guys.

WOW!!! I have been reading with great interest all the posts on artlure fishing for these wonderfull Barbel or as I like to call them  MERMAIDS! I am a rock and surf artificial man with many good kingfish and others under the belt however now living in JHB need to cure the hunger for hitting BIG fish on artificial!! I really want to get stuck into some specimen Barbel! I always want to catch the biggest fish in the water on artificial and face it Barbel are the biggest and strongest in the inland waters. I want some! Where would be a good place to start? Good water? Is it the right time!!!

Thanks Gents,

Look forward to your responses!

PS Great forum, I dont post on others any more due to ridiculous politics!

Hi Rag Bag!!

The best place to start is to go with someone that knows how to catch them. I would recommend talking to Ryan. I have learnt a grat deal from him and I am still learning from him everytime we go fish together. I bought myself a klopstok last Friday and it is totally worth it. It is one rod you can't go without. It is nice now in winter to fish for them because you can see them in the shallow water where they are baking in the sun. You just drop a lood koppie on it's "snorre" and you are "ON DAD". You can also catch them with lures. Ryan has one called a Salmo Slider and it is in Parrot colour. When you see the barbel turning you can catch them with it. We also do buddy casting for barbel. It is where both anglers throw the lures on the same spot, the barbel then come up and take one of the lures. This is just a little bit of info, but Ryan is the pro, he will be able to help you.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the reply and u absolutly right, could have been viewed in bad light, politics and fishing dont go together, fished for Natal Rock and surf for many years and dont even touch compeditive angling any longer. Clubs however are still great, always much to be learned! I must say your site is full of info and no politics! ITS GREAT!

My mission is defenately to pursue a beast mermaid photograph and return! I didint realise they accepted artificial so readily and agressive, this is great, ive been pining to have some line peeled of the reel!

My location is Edenvale, Gauteng.

Thanks again Ryan, read your article on Bloemhof last night in SL. Looks like there are some trucks in that water.

Rag Bag,

I think after the first time you have fished with us, you are going to trade your Cabin Cruiser for a bass boat. We target the mermaids off the bass boats as you can sneak up on them without them spooking. I have been a big fly fishing fanatic till Ryan took me barbel fishing for the first time. I am totally hooked. You shake with adrenalin every trip, doesn't matter how many times you have caught barbel.

My previous personal best.  Also caught on Ryan's klop stok. This was before I had my own klop stok.

Middle of July!! Fantastic fish guys! I put an offer in on a Bass boat yesterday at a local auction, waiting to hear if I got it?

Ryan I am most certainly keen to hit the water with you soon! What waters do you fish, I see Roodeplaat and Roodekoppies in the pics, any others? I have access to Lasts farm and Slaughters at the Vaal dam where Terry Babich has caught some huge mermaids in the secluded bays in and around these farms on fly, im sure a slider would get hammered in these bays! i think his last beast was 24kg, seen a pic at a friends cabbin at Slaughters.

The klopstock sounds interesting, seems very heavy though. I was thinking a good Shimano baitcaster loaded with some casting braid and a strong Berkly fire rod or Fenwick crank stick?

When you hitting the water again Ryan?

Thanks again guys for the enthusiasim and response, I am ready to search for some record busting mermaids with a good bunch of guys!

Hi Camstaude,

It is a telescopic rod where the line runs inside the rod and it does not have eyes. Look on the photo where I said : "Ryan with another barbel caught on the klop stok at Roodeplaat". You will get a good idea how it looks. It is a very very strong rod. The reason why it does not have eyes, is when you "call" the barbel in structure, so that there's no obstruction when the barbel take the lood koppie.
