This year we booked our annual trip to Leliekloof, about 25km from Jamestown. Our hosts, Dries and Minnie de Klerk made us feel more than welcome and catered for all our needs.
Not a lot of hosts will ask you not to put an injured fish back, but rather clean and take home. To top it off, Dries presented us with the smoked trout for breakfast.
The Aquarium dam is 4 hectares, clean and clear with nice cover in the form of reeds, weed beds, large boulders and trees. An aluminium dinghy with electric motor and battery is available and made life easy as the Eastern cape is renowned for wind.
The dam is well stocked and most of the fish caught were between 1,3kg and 1,7kg with enough 2kg fish to keep us happy. Of course there are some big fish, but you need hard work and a bit of luck.
Bigger flies in olive and brown such as the Papa roach and Dragonfly nymphs on sinking lines worked well. I mostly stuck to a floater with smaller nymphs and caught a fair share of fish.
We also fished a day on Snowden, water of Queenstown fly fishers. Also well stocked and should you stay close enough,I recommend you join the club.
