There seems to be a growing trend where more anglers are commuting to Fishing spots by motorcycle because of excessive petrol prices,ease of parking such as within harbours,etc.Some bikes average 50km to the litre and I calculated a savings of +R200 per month if travelling 100km per week.Is this the answer to the fuel crisis with regard to angling trips?

really sad to see this happening to the country.why are we not crosssubsidised from sasol.sasol is making billions from the increase in fuel price and the goverment is

In the 70's I used my Motorbike extensively for fishing, din't have 2 piece rods those days either.

Skrops has it right. Big bikes actually cost more to run than a small car. Tyres last about 6000km and cost from R3000,00 up to R4500,00 a set. Services are also every 5000km and can cost between R1000,00 and R5000,00. If you ride nicely you get about 15km/litre but most guys get about 12km/litre.
I was looking at the Bajaj Pulsar 180 which some guys claim is lightest motorbike on petrol or closest to lightest.Apparently goes like a bomb and apparently faster than most 250s.Only 1 cylinder but called DTSI - Double Twin Sparkplug Ignition.This DTSI improves the performance and the economy.I'ts an indian motorcycle which has won many awards already on the international scene.Some guys claim to get 60km per litre and it makes interesting reading wrt write-ups and reviews when googling 'Bajaj' or 'Pulsar'.And it's quite a looker.Cheers!

I have no Idea about the economy of scooters. Last time I worked on a scooter I was still an appie. More than 20 years ago. Modern scooters are far more refined and powerful than in those days.
Skrops-Stay away from scooters.I spent August in Thailand and did some much talked about Island hopping and ferries and scooters were my main mode of transport.Cost me like R20 a day to hire and got to see so much.But their scooters are genuine Jap bikes and on coming back to SA found +90% of ours are Chinese replicas of Jap bikes and very inferior.Went to test drive many scooters to get the feel of bike and owner's comments.Many guys were trying to dispose of these within 2000km and every scooter I rode had a piston slap noise which would be normal in 2strokes.But these were 4 stroke scooters.And my opinion is that they are death traps.Tried bigger scooters as well and still couldn't get more than 80kph.Rather look for an equivalent motorbike than a scooter.Cheers!

I had a Vuka for a while when they first came out, and it was great i got about 100km/2.5l ,im sorry i sold it now,it would also have accomodated 2 rod tubes comfortably!

In 2006 and the first half of 2007 motorcycle sales went through the roof. Everybody started importing cheap scooters and quads. The demand was so great that even the real scrap was selling faster than icecream. Today things have changed dramatically and the sales have dropped so badly that you cant give the things away. I know of 26 bike shops in Gauteng that have closed this year. Even the big shops are closing. The motor industry is in very bad shape at the moment. If you are really considering buying a bike , look at the on/off road versions that are usually single cylinder ,4 stroke models. They are easy to maintain and reasonably light on fuel. These bikes are good for commuting , but not meant for long trips. The fun part is that you can go almost anywhere.

Carcharias- you're very much close to spot on.Fished Bikini Beach in Gordon's Bay about 2 weeks ago I had a mission parking my car.Guy pulls up with scrambler and line's in the water.But have also seen standard bikes pulling onto Kalk Bay wall and looks very convenient with me parking about a km away from wall with my car.And then there's the worry about the safety of the car.But even if you don't use motorcycle to go fishing,there's still the trip to the Bait shop,or you need to get some Fishing gear like hooks,sinkers,etc.And the kilos build up when using car.I worked out that my savings on petrol would cover the monthly layout on the bike and if i buy right one it would not only be an investment but would knock down kilos as well as maintenance costs on my car.And sounds like it could be fun as well.Cheers!

My friend (a big boy - 130kg plus) baught himself a Yamaha Tenere 600cc, overhauled the motor, stiffened the rear coil spring, powder coated frame, resprayed parts. The bike looks brand new.
All this for a total of R20000.00
Parts for this make of bike is freely available and very cheap compared to other makes.
Best of all - It's a scrambler. Fitting semmi off-road tyres (seeing that nobblies are not allowed on asphualt roads anymore) enabling him to go where he wants. Me gonna get me one as-well, providing the "MRS" approves of-course.
The next person you see at Beespens, Strandfontein, Blakes or where ever, with a shiny monster might just be me.
HMM - Wonder where I'll store all the tail i'll be catching at the Kranz. Imagine that. Headline news. Biker tell a fishy tail.

(I know a kob that big should go back to the water, but it would be funny)Another good point.....take some foil and spices with in the fishing bag so that when you land a nice size gallie you can clean and spice it wrap it in the foil and tie it to the exhaust manifold. Depending on how far from home you're fishing it could be cooked by the time you get back!LOL!!!
