I have heard people talking about the vlei at melkbos. Can anyone tell me where it is. I'm a pretty familiar with the spots from Kreeftebaai to Slabbert se kip but the vlei is a mystery to me.

Drive into melkbos at t junction (spur) on your right turn left at the end of the road turn right (fire station) behind u and flats on your left

then walk to your left about 700 meters you will find 2or3 crayfish boats

on the beach look towards the sea u should spot a narrow channal

leading into a pond between the kelp about 50 m out .

or just before you enter melkbos i think its bontkop park at fence go

down to sea walk right 500 m or so and spot the boats

one problem when u get back your car is gone hot spot to steal

enjoy

Thanks very much guys. I have seen guys fishing from boats/yaks in the hole and I believe that kob can be caught there. Is it possible to cast into it from shore or will you just get hooked in the weed. Where should I cast?

Hi Mark,

The spot is very foul, due to the rocks and kelp, and its extremely difficult to land a big fish through the kelp.

However, its a VERY productive spot.  The best time would be on high tide and early morning and late evening.   You will find two small gaps between the kelp on the right hand and left hand side, you can cast in them. Otherwise  The best, if you can cast a distance, is to cast in the middle of the gap, or next to the kelp...

In the summer you would get plenty cob and sometimes geelbek.  During winter months there is Steenbra's, BIG stumps, plenty Galjoen....ANF VERY BIG COW SHARKS!!!! but you can forget landing one of them in the kelp....

Baits used, summertime, Pilchard, mullet fillets, chokka, pike.  And in the winter, Prawn, white mussel, any worm.

Just be carefull when fishing alone at night, as this place is a HIGH poaching area!

Regards

hi DG,

That will be my next spot when I go dowm to Melkbos again, not my usual Kreeftebaai. Sounds like you know the area and conditions well, what would be the best conditions to try the vlei now(winter) - 1st or 2nd day of South easter?

no no.....i onlyh learn from the best (...;) at ROFFLIGN)

In the summer the SE is king, the best would be after a heavy SE. During winter I would say any wind will do....except those gale force winds....

Vlei has to be my favorite fishing spot ever! Caught more than 100 kob and 40 Geelbek this past season in there, from my little rubber duck though!

Hi Dorado75,

Have you had any BIG cow pickups while fishing in the vlei with the inflatable?  I know there is some BIG boys swiming through the kelp there!

I have heard stories about guys fishing off  their kayaks, small craft that was being harass by BIG COWS!

What do you mean by big when you say big cows? I think i'll go give them a try. I know there is a resident female that lives in the kelp there of +- 100kg that sometimes chases the divers.

I have never had a run in with a cow shark in the vlei before, i have been run off by big fish on a few occasions though while fishing for kob, but it felt like big kob and not cow's!

heheheh! that would be the one, it tried to get into a mate of mines kayak one day,he had to beat it off with a paddle! seems like it was chasing the kob he was pulling in.

@camo shorts...I really hate the vlei, every time I go there something seems to go wrong, from slipping and breaking a toe, getting fouled in the kelp almost every cast, losing decent size fish , lost my favourite bait knife, had a close brush with lightning and the last outing cost me a longnose pliers....I much prefer the little gullies around the vlei area, they at least preserve my sanity!
