Here's a suggestion that might help. On a tagging trip in feb, I discovered quite by accident that 1mm flourocarbon works damn well as a trace for elf. I took a spool of flouro that I usually use for baiting for yellowfin and decided to give it a try.

One elf of in particular took a hook deep in the throat and the flouro took most of the tooth damage with ease. Elf measured 65cm.
A bit shredded, but it held.

Its expensive, but you can get away with cheaper makes like Triple Fish as opposed to Ande or Double X.

Give it a bash.

Kraken part of the problem is trace changes...Really how often do you check traces when the Elf is on the bite...Wire should hold at least 4 5-10 throws with regular pick ups.

How much damage can a flouro trace endure b4 being bitten off.

I guess this yr it's been the storie of my season 4 being bitten off by Elf often LoL.

1st tym 4 everything...::S

I made 40lb traces for these buggers but the way you are talking sounds like I must change my strategy. Got thick deep sea trace at home. Maybe I must make some of those traces for back up. If that don't work then I must then use my dog's choke chain LOL.

Yeah, good point. Will be giving the flouro more of a bash on next months trip, so will have a firmer idea of its capabilities. If damage is too bad, we just rety hook anyway as per offshore. Heavy gauge flouro is incredibly tough material. I don't like wire anyway, it reminds me too much of my shark fishing days...........bwahahahahahaha!!!!

Hi BB, pity about the bite-offs, not lekker when they do that right in front and you see the buggers!

What thickness was your trace? Thicker snoek line between bung and hook also works for me!

I will give you a tip. Bend your J-hook slightly so that the sharp part is facing approximately at 1 o'clock from the eye. Just remembered that now. Come to think about it I never checked my new hooks. Maybe that's why I'm blanking recently.

Stainless steel MIG welding wire. You can even stand by my pole where the Elf have no respect for shop made traces!

Jy sal sien hulle lyk soos Cape Flats Elwe as jy welding wire gebruik! Dit slaan vir hulle 'n mooi passion gap in daai voor tande!
