The PH project!

PH sent me a box of exotic woods and as a gesture of thanks, I think it's only fitting that he gets the first lure.

This is Purple Heart!

Thanks PH, I hope you are going to like it and I hope it is full of teeth marks in no time!

It has been machine, all holes drilled and soaked in sanding sealer. Next step is to get it nice and smooth.

The Black Wood may be too dense and heavy to use as lures or poppers.

If this is the case have  nice (fish) braai with it

Bennie - Superb as usual mate, gotta love those exotic hardwoods...

Have you got access to any Msimbeet ? (spelling? ) its a beautiful yellow wood, with a "off-set" core of black wood... got fantastic grains in it...

My Dad was a master wood turner, and along with Wild Olive, Msimbeet was his favourite wood to turn... He actually made me a "Priest/Fish Batton" out of it, which is incredible... its pretty dense and heavy, and any fish getting in its way goes to sleep very quickly!!!

Gauva was another Favourite of the old mans, and one I really enjoyed turning as well... very smooth grain and a pleasure to turn... quite light, and light in colour, but very fine grain which would lend itself to great finishing....

Wish I still had all my old mans tools, just no space for it down here...

Keep up the good stuff mate.

Thanks Nepps,

I'm still fairly new to the "wooden lure" side of things. Will see what I can get. I also want to try some Cotton wood, it's light and has a sheen to the wood with like wavy milky colouration, a bit soft though. I think I need to make a turn to Exotic woods and have a squiz.

Bennie there is a place in New Germany I think, called Rarewoods.... 031 705 5000 give them a buzz...

I'm trying to remember the other place my Dad used, which is in Pinetown I think.... Rarewoods is more commercial, so might not have the little off cuts you need...

If I can get hold of some Zebrano mate, can you turn me something?

Rarewoods in New Germany closed down in April last year. Their head office in Cape Town is still going as far as I know. They sell offcuts in bags as braai wood

Bennie - Yip, Country Woods is the one! My old man got a fair bit from them, and luckily a good family friend owned a tree felling business down in Umtentweni, and brough my old man all sorts of stuff... when he passed away, my dad had an entire garage full of logs and stumps and such in various stages of curing....

I'll source some Zebrano down here and send it up to you. Thanks.

Just come to Knysna. We buy "kunsmis" bags full of off cuts for firewood! The last time I got some I paid R15 a bag but the price has gone up since then.

On my way! See you in 15 minutes! haha, wish it was that easy. I must check with local suppliers for "braai wood", good idea.

At this point it measures 160mm long and weighs 105 grams. I'm using a SS billot  for the tail.

Hi Bennie
what dimensions do you need in raw timber? I have lotsa off cuts in varied species / sizes. But in Cape Town?
That purple heart makes good decking, you could leave it raw?
have you tried gonco alves? Have machine shop with a copy lathe if need to run a batch.

Cheers Barry

Thanks Barry, I am trying as many different woods as possible and the reason why I appreciat receiving these off cuts. To make anything worthwhile I need from 40mm square and from 150mm long. I am not familiar with gonco, no. Nepptune is trying to get some wood too, maybe if you can hold onto it, we can get it up here together. I'm not into copying anything. I prefer making individuals, thanks for the offer.

Cheers
Bennie

Cool Bennie, will pull some out for you. should have have iroko / oak / gonco / jarrah / teak / maple and many others, well quite a few, how much do you want as I have quite a bit?

Happy to plane 4 sides square to make easier to start on the lathe.

Will let you know what species I have etc then can touch base with nepptune.

cheers B

Dude, WOW! Anything you can spare, doesn't have to be a ton of stuff. If you can square it for me, that would be great. Let me know how I can return the favour. Same trade off??? Wood for lures??

Thanks a lot buddy.
