The breakwater @ Cape Town Harbour

Great to see the responses to this topic thanks sealiners. The reason i was given for the breakwater being closed was due to the 9/11 attacks, Portnet was warned against having the breakwater open to the public in case of attacks coming against american shipping going into the harbour. Weather this is true or not it is definately something that was plausable at that time but unrealistic at best.

If one tries to fish of the concrete structures around the waterfront(dollas) the V&A security ask u to remove yourself, understandably so they are only doing what they have been told as this is private property and they can do so, but the BREAKWATER TO MY UNDERSTANDING is portnet property and i stand to be corrected. ALTHOUGH THE v&A SECURITY are on u pretty quick sometimes whenst lurking round there (nice redbait amongst the concrete) they are pretty useless when it comes to information about why its closed. Which leads me to think that THE V&A have a say ,  towards opening the breakwater up as i dnt think they want fisherman around there precious shoppin mall.

SO the idea to put forward to the powers that be would be to have the breakwater properly secured with a railing so people are secured and cannot fall over the edge ,have a boom gate with a hut and a security person on duty for daytime and night time and have the breakwater run as a tourist attraction which will without a doubt be a solid money maker as the views from the end are amongst the worlds best.

Fishing permits allow u free ENTRY OR REDUCED cost and of course the opening of the breakwater will be controlled by the boom gate operator according to the roughness of the sea.

Who controls it all ,Who do we go to. Well i dnt care who makes the money as long as the fisherman can fish there at a minimal expense or pref none at all.

It wld be a great achievment to get thru the red tape on this one and perhaps with 2010 round the corner that can be used to get it done. Can we start a poll to see whose behind this idea ....pls any critism is welcome so lay it down ive just been seeing positive reasons for opening it up again for those in control of it, money to be made. PUT that in front of the BIG dog let him eat and walk right on by tackle in hand.

I would love to fish there again,as a young boy I used to bunk school just to fish there, MASBANKERS,GERNARD,STOCKFISH,BIG HARDERS,SKATE,BIG MACKERAL.

As mentioned by "will101 & Bamboosskollie", the sole reason for closing the East Pier Breakwaterwall at the Port of Cape Town is because of security reasons. I am a employee at TNPA and the Port is compelled by "IMO" International Maritime Organization(Code section; ISPS after 9/11) not to have public gain access to the breakwater wall.

I also miss the winter days that we used to cacht nice Hake, Kob & Vaalies off the wall.

I manage the social Rock & Surf club for TNPA - Cape Town and has requested permission for the club to fish off the wall for a single day and it was declined. my 2 cents
