Hi there

Ive been fishing that dam for ages and i dont care that im gonna get laught at now lol .how do u catch a small grasscarp in bloehof dam .(and yes it is me Anton Barnard u know me),

i never landed a grassie at bloemhof ,i must say that i never catch from the shore .im always on my boat.

SMall grassies are where you don't fish with the boat. you would be looking for water .5-1.2m deep.

If fishing from a boat go into the sloep and fish up against the banks over a popcorn feed bed.

One of the best places to catch them however is in the river below the dam, feed some popcorn feed 2m from the side and fish with a drift line onto that feed

Or a very light rietvlei trace with a floatie on it

i will gladly still support u ,i got good service and like i told u   my son still uses the reels and i still think it is a great reel even better than my LC,s   if it only had a metal adjuster at the back .but now i dont have the bucks to replace them with a newer model .when somday there is a few that falls of the truck .keep me in mind lol

A friend of mine has a place on the Vaaldam near Frankfort, he showed me some pics of 4 barble he's caught there on his last 3 trips and claimed they were all over 30kg.

I questioned his scale and he immediately produced weigh slips from the butcher in Frankfort. He sacked them in wet carp sacks, took them to town on an unhooking mat and had them weighed along with a printout from the scale.

The fish are not long enough to be 30kg if they were a Bloemhof or river Cat but are so fat and well fed they easily reach the weight of 28, 30.5 and 31.2kg.

I'm going to see if we can get out to fish this section. It is a long flat dam section with a sudden drop to 14m and this is where they get the big Cats

Going to use Trophy's static Wells rig there. Going to rig a 1kg+ Grass Carp on that rig at around 6-8m deep water

I have a place between Bothaville and leeudoringstad  and we catch 25 Kg ones easaly .just upstream is a weir in the river and it is a food generator it seems

Hi Enigma

Can you recommend a rod and reel combo that one can use to tackle to these giants (excuse the pun:)? What is the correct tackle one should be using for targeting barbel greater than 20kg?

We fish with Spor Rods (4 or 5lbs) and lately the Oval DC 12'6 and 12' rods.

We use 0.35mm mainline or 40-50lbs braid

0.60mm leader and 0.60-0.80mm leaders

Shimano XTR-A or B 10'000's or Big Pits

My son cauth this de Hoek Catfish last September on the Oval DC, Shimano XTR-B and 0.35mm ION Power Camo Quattro line

From what Ive used

Mono- Double X Hi Viz or Berkley Big Game 30lb

Braid- Suffix 832 or Jerry Brown Line One  (my favourite) in 30-50 lb

great post. just a few questions, what trace did you use? did you tie it with a three way swivel? and how long should the trace lines be? Thanks.
